  • Which one gets the vote then? Horizontal or Diagonal?

    Questions
Diagonal: Do they not feel like they're twisting your feet especially after a long ride?
Horizontal: isn't tightening and loosening up much harder?

  • I'm 2/3 of the way through this experiment. I've always ridden clipless. Built a pub bike and wanted to leave the sidi's at home and went for holdfast horizontals...take so much effort to get them dialled in when you install them...not so easy so get fully into them, and once you're right in its hard to get out...so exactly as above. Look good though! Just about to try double straps with cages after trying the singles i put on on my mrs' bike and all felt good.

  • Horizontal is much more comfortable IMO, the diagonal ones always hurt my feet. If it's for a long riding longer distances though I would invest in/use clipless

  • for longer/faster rides clipless is always better.

I have horizontal restraps for pub/shops etc. I set them up with a particular set of trainers and now only wear those when riding straps.

  • I found riding diagonal restraps to be really comfortable after I'd got them set up just right (which took quite a bit of tweaking). I still much preffered riding clipless though.

  • I have horizontals on my commuter bike; once you're in & going they're comfortable enough but there are some drawbacks:

    • You have to adjust them every time you change trainers, which is annoying.
    • If your trainers are quite rubbery they're hard to get into
    • After riding clipless they feel horrendously slack.

It's getting to the point where I'm considering changing back to SPDs & just putting my work trainers in my bag.

  • Cheers guys, So in essence horizontals are fine but fiddly to readjust and get in and out. Diagonals there's a mixed opinion, either uncomfortable or fiddly and good.

FYI, I usually ride clipless but have injured my knees and need to ride foot retentionless or with straps for a while hence why I'm ditching cleats for now. Any more experiences please keep them coming! especially with regards to diagonals, I tried some briefly on some guys bike post ride yesterday and like the fact that the twisting action tightens them up but was worried over a longer commute they'd cause problems.

  • I like diagonals.

  • And dragons.

  • Ok123, was this because it just got too tight or did you feel you were constantly twisting your feet to keep them straight?

  • Snottyotter, have you tried horizontals at all?

  • Briefly, I had a bit of trouble getting in but that could have been big pins on the pedals and grippy shoes and lack of experience.

I think it was the twisting motion as my ankle began to hurt, I gave up on them pretty quick. Athough harder to get into I preferred horizontals, and found them really easy to skid in (compared to clips and straps).

  • Why can't the Interwebz give me a unanimous decision?? I'm probably gonna end up getting both and trying them out to see the differences. Expect a full review in a few weeks.

  • One foot each.

  • one of the big advantages of clips and straps over velcro straps is they're really quick to adjust to different shoes. Velcro is sloooooooow and takes a few tries to get it right.
also much better cornering clearance not using fat bmx pedals

  • I use smaller pedals with diagonals and they're fine with a few pairs of shoes.

  • ^^^was seriously considering trying that actually, would make sense if you think about it. One foot secure, the other easier to pull in and out. Track standing can >>>>>>>>>>>>>>

^^don't necessarily have to use BMX pedals, normal flat road pedals can be fitted with velcro straps

  • Shit.

  • you're doing it wrong.

Don't ride fixed when you have knee problems already- it'll only get worse.

  • Not necessarily true.

Don't push weights or gears that are too big, pain and damage will also depend on the nature of your knee problems.

  • FWIW I find horizontals to be the next best thing to clipless, clips and straps run loose enough to get my foot out didn't feel anywhere near as solid.

  • I find riding fixed better for knees than riding ss. Anyhow it's the cleats that were an issue not big gears (although i was at times guilty of that) or riding fixed.

Would the diagonal strap fit on these?
