  • I hope he sends a really important text message, but gets no reply and spends days fretting about it. Then finally he cracks and goes to send a follow-up and sees that little exclamation mark next to it and realises the first one was never sent successfully.

  • I hope the next time he does a tinkle he shakes himself off to make sure it's all gone, and then because he thinks he's being smart he does another shake just in case, but then when he zippers himself up, there was a little bit still left and it dribbles into his pants. Not enough for anyone to notice it on his trousers but enough for him to feel a damp patch for the next 10 minutes and to think "oh, I'm a grown adult and i can't even do a wee properly" for the rest of he day.

  • Official apology is now up

    He's uglier then I thought

  • He looks like EXACTLY the sort of man who would hang out his car window shouting at you and trying to run you off the road!!!!!

I know you shouldn't judge a book by its cover and all that, but fuck me! That's a textbook image!

  • P. S - I hope next time he does a little trump in the hope that no-one notices, he will accidently let out an audible rasping stinker and those nearest to him will vocalise their disgust causing him to laugh and joke about it but deep down feel ashamed.

  • What a fucking cock.

Please let me begin by offering my unreserved apologies for any offence or distress caused by my blog in September’s issue of The Richmond Magazine.
My blog was intended to be an ironic take on the weeks of Olympic euphoria and the way in which, once such moments pass, we tend to revert to type. However, I can now see that my comments had the potential for ambiguity, and with hindsight of course, it would have been far better to have chosen my words more carefully.
Largely, the controversy has focused upon the phrase “the only good cyclist is a dead one”. It seems that this has been interpreted as, at best, flippancy about cycling fatalities, at worst, an actual desire to see harm befall cyclists on our roads. Let me make it absolutely clear that this was not my intention. Neither is it representative of Sheengate Publishing’s editorial policy on cycling, which we fully understand is a vital aspect of Surrey life.
I should add that I am well aware of the vulnerability of cyclists on our roads and the importance of addressing this. In practice, I endeavour to always approach them with the same degree of courtesy and caution as I would any other road user.
In conclusion, I would like to reiterate to everyone – readers and advertisers alike – who have been offended by my words, or those who have sadly suffered a bereavement as a result of a cycling accident, my sincerest apologies.

  • The comments on that link are scathing.

    Brilliant.

  • 'Potential for ambiguity'. Ha!

  • The only cycle shop advertising in this shit rag have blogged this

  • Who gives a fuck? Just another ignorant wanker either making a daft point or unaware of his moronic bravado.

What is the actual problem here, is it that we think that these people perpetuate intolerance of cyclists and ultimately make us more vulnerable on the roads? That is a legitimate point, but sometimes it just seems like a load of smug do-gooders having a whinge and getting all precious about their hobby.

  • I give a fuck.

Because this sort of "daft point" and "moronic bravado" needs to disappear from the mindset of the British public, which will arguably take decades.

  • ^^ I sometimes have reservations about the extent/nature of the backlash when these things crop up, but I definitely think it's good that this guy is being held to account for his comments as he might think more carefully about what he publishes in future...

The mindset, presumably, being that it's ok if cyclists are killed? Do you really think he means that, honestly? I think we as group can be a tad reactionary sometimes. I also think that jumping on every last titbit of bad feeling dilutes those occasions where it's a direct threat, for example the Addison Lee saga.

    +1, exactly.

    Yes. I do.

Yes, it is a legitimate point and you answered your own question straight away. There's nothing 'smug' about calling out this kind of garbage. 'Do-gooders' is an almost meaningless term but your facility with it might get you an internship at one of the less reputable newspapers, even, eventually, your own column. And cycling is not a 'hobby' for most people, even on here, it is primarily simply a means of transport.

'Reactionary' does not mean 'given to reacting' or 'over-reacting'.
The vigorous reactions in this case seem to have been pretty effective at getting businesses to pull their ads - no doubt the real reason he has backtracked. But either way you won't be reading this sort of ill-informed and casual nonsense about cyclists in that magazine any more. And no doubt other nonentities with their own columns in local magazines will hear about this story and be more circumspect themselves if they ever have the urge to play Billy Big Balls.

  • Billy Big Balls.

Was he one of the Bash Street Kids?

    I give a fuck too.

A tad reactionary? I doubt the families of the many cyclists who've been killed in London over the years would think so.

Although Nye doesn't direct/own a vehicle company, make transport policy or similar, his words aren't harmless. At best his vicious comments suggest it's OK to verbally abuse and mock people more vulnerable than him, at worst they spawn hatred of those who cycle whilst perpetuating the 'them and us' mentality it's so vital we move away from if we are to see any meaningful changes in our culture.

I agree that it's not particularly wise or helpful to spend a lot of time getting upset and angry about these controversial outbursts. However, nor should we be told to sit back and say nothing.

And "hobby"? Come on! You make it sound like a frivolous, dispensable way to pass the time. Of course for some people it is, but given that much of the lobbying LCC does involves trying to make TfL, the government, local councils etc. take seriously the concept of cycling as a mode of transport, calling it hobby is unhelpful.

  • ^^ Fucking this.

  • Official apology is now up

That kind of bloated face can be a symptom of binge drinking. Google it and you'll see it.

  • That kind of bloated face can be a symptom of binge drinking. Google it and you'll see it.

The only good binge drinker is a dead one.

  • What he said was wrong and absolutely disgusting given the amount of people who have died in this city this year alone, but at the the end of the day I can honestly say I am not shocked at all.

Unfortunately this and other things I have heard lately just confirm what so many people think about cyclists.

I have to deal with this sort of attitude 9 hours a day, five days a week while working and I don't think it will ever change.

By no means am I defending this knobba though, so please do carry on with the stake burning.

  • Who the fuck proofs the Richmond and Barnes Magazine?

    "swinehunt"?!??!

  • That kind of bloated face can be a symptom of binge drinking.

Also a potential symptom of being punched in the face repeatedly.

Either way, he doesn't look like a well man. Perhaps he should think about taking up cycling.

  • He should ride one of those nice and safe Create's.
