Nah, nothing 'choppy', but I blame my obsessions with magnet fishing, car boot sales, the local tip, and 'forged in fire'. Oh, and my gypsy heritage. And hoarding.
I love a bit of fettling!

Cheers, Dan. Pop the photos up here, and we can start a bidding war :-)

If there's some guitar neck-shaped bits I wouldn't mind some, if there's spare...

Guilty pleasure.
It follows the usual shite to formula of sad story/inspiring story- look at this/after the break with some reassuringly cheesy hosts/experts, including 'edged weapon specialists' and 'master bladesmiths'.....But I can't stop watching!

On hardwood chat, I noticed in the B&Q by Purley Way, they had a "natural wood" section. Looked like a few cutting board sized natural edge off cuts and a few big discs. Didn't clock the prices or species but will take a closer look next time I'm in and report back.

After lots and lots and lots of sanding, it's ready to be oiled & waxed.

I'm still impressed that you could tell there was a perfect sphere in that rough piece of wood!

Less spoke and a tiny wooden plug for the top of the paw?

Less spoke and a tiny wooden plug for the top of the paw?
It might have worked at the time, but I couldn't remove the spoke now without a 99.99999999999% chance of snapping the arm off.
Ideally, I would have used a stronger wood to begin with :-)

Managed to get a little done today. This old piece of maple is really hard to work.

There's a lot of skills that I know I couldn't do, but that I understand. Wood carving is a skill that I just cannot fathom how it's possible. Incredible work.

Very nice. Hard because it’s such hard wood or because it cracks or something?
It’d be cool to see what tools you used to get to this stage? -

It's having a good laugh at all my tools, no matter how sharp they are. It's a really close-grained piece of wood, and I've had it for over a decade. It might have been easier to work when I first got it.
Will just have to slowly chip away at this one.
It’d be cool to see what tools you used to get to this stage?
So far, a handheld belt-sander, to get the block relatively square. Then a jigsaw, to cut out the initial shape. I could use a router to remove material a bit faster, but it's noisy, messy, and less forgiving of any little slips.
I'll try and post some photos of which carving gouge is used for a particular bit.
