I usually do all my own work at Cranks. If I need bits quickly then I'll go round to (potentially all of) the bike shops until I find what I need at a decent price. If you want repairs done, go to Liam at G-Whiz, I'm biased because he's a good friend of mine.

I am no longer your friend then. Unless you buy me a pint.

If you want wheels built, however, Cheesecake_intl is the man tits. He'll do anything to get his mitts on your hubs.
Come through for a pint you old bursty sausage, gimme a shout!

Got some wheels being built at Velo Vitality. Can't wait to get them back.
John was so much cheaper than anywhere else I asked. Plus he's really down to earth and doesn't presume you're a complete tool. -

Bike sent to South Coast for an insurance quote. They are good but expensive.
However I'll be repaid via insurance.

That's the only time a n expensive shop comes in handy I guess.
Do you have to get the work done through them? -

Been riding fixed for a year roughly and now live in Brighton as a first year student. Looking at swapping up my drivetrain (bb, cranks, chainring, chain, cog & pedals). I'm pretty sure I know what I want in terms of ratio and I've already looked into picking up all the parts I need
I've never done drivetrain work before so ideally I'd like to either do it with someone who knows what they're doing, or observe them doing it for me in return for some £££ so that I can learn how to do it on my own
Would anyone in the area be interested in helping me out? I'm not a little yuppie that views my bike as a fashion accessory, I'm just here to learn how to make my bike nicer to ride and I'm enjoying my fitness improving too.
Beers at the very least on offer for a helping hand (no sexual favours tho)
Thanks

Come to Cranks, a community bike workshop on Chapel Street in Kemptown. Open Tuesday evening 3ish til 8ish, Friday and Saturday 11ish til 5ish.
It was set up for just what you describe, to help people learn about their bikes and how to look after them! Working on a donation basis it turns out a lot cheaper than a bike shop too.
We've got a board of tools, and plenty of time to help you get rolling. If you need advice on which parts to buy (it may be best to check before shelling out) then we're happy to help with that too.

Sweet man, yeah I randomly got talking to a teaching assistant working on Falmer campus the other day and he mentioned Cranks, I unfortunately almost immediately forgot the details and never saw him again.
I won't be able to get down until I can get hold of some money, got a flat rear and can't afford an innertube at the mo so I'd rather wait until I can cycle so I can bring the bike itself down with me
Sounds absolutely perfect for what I need though - bored of shops being condescending and trying to overcharge just because I don't know as much as I 'should'
Thanks mane

Ollie where do you live? Sure I've got a spare tube I can chuck through your door if it's vaguely between work and home tomorrow.

Appreciate the offer deeply, but I managed to scrounge a tenner so went to Cranks this morning and fitted a new tube there. Going back tomorrow to change over my front wheel as I've not got any necessary tools to do it at my uni halls.
Found them (particularly Julian) to be incredibly helpful

+1 Julian is a champion, he helped me a lot and managed to be interested and unpatronising and generous

Pretty much sums up my experience thus far with him - doubt I'll be going anywhere else next time my (limited) knowledge fails me

That's so good to hear from you both, Ollie & ocdc! Pop into Cranks whenever, keep the place buzzing with good vibes and good bikes :)

Yep, I'll come say hi when I'm back in Brighton. Currently rummaging by the bins behind a bike shop in Berlin. Keep cranking it dice.

Let me know if you find any pristine Bianchi pista framesets, around a 58 will do

Aww mate, we get so many of those we're having to chuck them away!
-

Hi Cranks sounds really good. It seems as though there are a lot of people trying to make fixies and lots who are struggling to complete projects. This is a great resource.

I would like to add Rayment Cycles into the mix.
Twice I've gone to them with bottom bracket related issues and twice they have helped me out and not charged me for sorting it.
Velo Vitality all the way!
