  • Mr "I don't like melody".

    Er?

  • SW4 was a-ma-zing!

  • I went to Truck festival 2 years in a row '07 '08, and that was really nice - only about 3,000 people, 3 stages with a very eclectic mix of music and a really nice atmosphere - the rotary club provided food and the village vicar sold his home-made ice cream.

I just don't like large crowds of people, really, so festivals tend to get my back up. I might got to Calvi on the rocks or something like that, but there's no chance you'd find me in Glastonbury.

    Was it articulated?

  • SW4 was a-ma-zing!

I went to the SW4 afterparty at Electric Brixton...

What an absolute shower of cunts. It felt like I was back at uni and in a student union. Women looked lost and tired, the men looked lost and angry, as if going to a club was a very new experience to all of them. It made for an awkward atmostphere as my dancing got progressively more outlandish as the evening progressed whilst others went in the opposite direction. Towards the end, the girl and I were the only ones enjoying ourselves.

At 4.30 when pete tong started, the dance floor was half empty.

I went to Cable afterwards for the 8am to 1pm session, when I recognised half the people in the queue from SW4 I decided me and my lady friend would just go home.

I'm 24 and even I feel there is something wrong with the youth of today, they need to be less concious of what other people are thinking and just dance.

  • I went to Glade this summer and it was the best festival experience i have had.

Sun shone the whole weekend, it was (relatively) affordable, only 5000 people, had a full Function 1 soundsystem at every single stage and most importantly everyone else that went was chilled and there to have a good time.

I knew very few of the DJs playing (other than by name), and still know very few now. That wasn't why I went though, it was more that it was a holiday with the right music and the right people.

also... there was literally no advertising on site at all. which was refreshing!

I ended up going to Crucifix (next to cable) from 3 till 7 (next to cable).

there were some strange people there.

But basically I zoned everyone out. I was there to dance. So i danced until my legs could no longer keep the beat. My muscles refused to move in time to my minds command.

  • Razor blades for tomorrow then?

  • why?

Have you seen the sun is out? :-)

  • Every festival needs a Police Rave Unit to ensure fun is had by all:

  • But basically I zoned everyone out.

    We sound very similar.

  • I can understand going clubbing (although since the smoking ban the smell of armpits and feet has put me off ever going again). Where there is decent acoustics to make sure all those big tunes will sound fucking great, there's a proper floor for dancing and decent toilets (except at Turnmills, which were fucking disgusting). A record is literally a recording of a particular performance or production. A moment in time. They sound exactly the same whether they are played by Carl Cox or Joe Bloggs or you. Sure, Coxy might play particular records in a particular order, and judge the mood of a room particularly well, but is that worth festival money?

When you see a band play live, that is the only time those songs will ever sound like that. It is a unique experience. And they are the only people that can make that song sound like that. No other band, even the best tribute, can sound like the real thing. Put that together and you can understand why people are willing to pay a fortune to stand in a field to experience it.

Dude you seem to have not read the majority of my post before last. I mention one dj playing tunes at the big chill and that is all you have focused on, whilst conveniently ignoring the other bits which mentioned the live performances, breakestra, digable planets, etc.

I'm never going to say I'm all about the live performance, most of the time, I find them boring to be honest, people standing 1984like staring at a stage off in the distance. Yeah a live performance is unique, but that's not to say that they are all mindblowingly amazing, and worthy of remembrance, dodgy pa's. lackluster performances, an inability to pull the crowd along with them, or all of the above and more.

You think live performances are the be all and end all cool! But a dj who can take you on that journey from a-b, and keep you dancing non-stop without the aid of chemical assistance is a rare thing. And your understanding of going clubbing with the list of caveats you have supplied makes out to me that you kind of never enjoyed it in the first place.

and to answer your last question I'm not going to play festival money to listen to a dj, but I will pay festival money for a trip overseas to listen to dj's I rate, in an interesting locale, with decent weather, and see some bands/performers over a weekend, that I might not get to see in a year back in old blighty.

Dont forget that if youre there to see certain DJs, chances are those DJs you dont know will be playing a similar genre so you get to experience hopefully new, but decent stuff

    I went.

Did Sasha turn up in the end? He was due on at 1:45 but was an hour late and I just went. Yeah really strange crowd.

  • I loved Crookers... Sadly they blew something or overheated an amp and the crowd died :-( Awesome set though

  • But basically I zoned everyone out.

    We sound very similar.

Ah, the people-pointing-and-laughing-at-you thing... My condolences...

  • Actaully, there was a point where some girls were "trying to get my attention" that were actually annoyingly bumping into me. I had to move. I only have eyes for you Joe.

I got to go to Shambala for free because I helped with the take down. It was fun, but mostly because I rode there and back from croydon, and there was a tent playing ska that got louder when you pedaled a bike hooked up to a generator.

  • Interesting thread. Download was ace this year IMO.

Disclaimer: I did market research for Ticketmaster + Live Nation and got to watch most of it from the sound deck / stage plus free beer/accomodation/travel/passes etc etc

but I would have paid to go too. great experience and was my 1st time at a multiple day festival.

I do know what you mean though.

The TLDR; result of the research that we did (6 focus groups, 6-8 people semi-randomly selected) basically said that people did feel sponsors were being a little too pushy, but would still tolerate more in-your-face marketing if that meant ticket prices would be lower. There is obviously more to it than that though...

    Thoughts on sponsorship and prices?

  • Ah, the people-pointing-and-laughing-at-you thing... My condolences...

    Perhaps.

Fortunately I've never noticed anyone openly laughing at my I'm-too-fucked-to-care-dancingTM and I don't see why they would - the only way you'll look truly bad is if you're uncomfortable as it shows immediately. I dance because I enjoy it, who cares what others think? Simples.

Actaully, there was a point where some girls were "trying to get my attention" that were actually annoyingly bumping into me. I had to move. I only have eyes for you Joe.

I only had eyes for the girl I arrived with despite a few trying to get my attention. Why does that not happen on nights when I'm not with a girl?

abouthebike, I arrived at 2.30 and we thought we'd missed Sasha, maybe didnt play?

  • if im on my own, i lose the confidence in that situation. I find it unnatural so dont know how to react other than to scamper to somewhere where i wont be bumped

  • ptr, I'm thinking maybe he didn't play. Very annoying.

With club nights in general, is there any chance what so ever of getting money back if a DJ is a no show?? Or am I pissing in the wind?

I briefly chatted with a guy who'd just arrived by bike from Croydon on the Friday (i think, mentioned the led rides that'd arrived Thurs)... might have been you? It's the interactive stuff that makes the festival, e.g. pedal power ska stage. The Electro Space robot dude by the Ferris Wheel was brilliant, if you saw him?

Was gutted earlier to chop off my crew band for another year, bring on 2013.

I'm still owed money for a Motorhead/Anthrax collab that never happened in '99

  • still sad to have missed the Shambala this year, have been 3 in a row.
that police rave unit was brilliant last year, top quality gags
they have changed a bit since 1990 last year of the travellers at glasto bang bang bang bang on but people still create a fantastic part of the summer scene, good luck to them.
