What JB isn't mentioning is that almost as soon as establish he's got Siri reading him a message and he's driving so can't read it, I'll start typing out a longish message and 3/4 of the way through, when I know he's concentrating on what Siri is saying and, then write "bum bum bum bum bum bum bum farts farts farts balls balls ball ball balls balls balls I love trump 69 420 blaze it"

A thing I notice more (esp at lights) is more and more social media scrolling. Cos you see the hands swiping down.

[…] while stationary at a red light isn't dangerous in the slightest if […]
There is some evidence that the distraction lasts for quite a while:
There were long-lasting residual costs after [In-Vehicle Information System eg mobile phone] interactions had terminated. These residual costs were notable for their magnitude and duration – in fact, it took 27 seconds to return to single-task baseline levels of performance.

Plus once you're in the habit of looking at lights, you'll maybe sneak a peak when a message comes in, or you'll start having a look on an empty road because it never caused a problem before. It's bullshit and shouldn't happen.

Yep, that’s why I’m nipping it now, won’t be doing voice to text either because even that can be distracting.

If you're waiting at lights you should be checking around to get a good idea of what's going on around you so you know it's safe to move off when the lights change, not just, ooh, green, phone down, move.

I hate you, you utter bastard.

Specific to my province, varies across Canada, we’re kind of in the middle of the pack.

Lol. He's not lying.

I do too

If you need to get a quick message to someone I reckon it's safer than a completely legal hands-free call.
Possibly, but then I think "completely legal" hands-free calls are still hugely distracting and should be banned too.

hands-free calls are still hugely distracting
Yes, in addition to the normal cognitive overhead of maintaining a conversation there is no shared context of the driver’s safety-critical environment—eg the other party can’t see when the driver is approaching a roundabout, a pedestrian crossing, cyclist etc and pause/stop.

You can't beat the guilty "I was definitely paying attention, shit the lights have changed I need to set off, what have I just driven into" move.

He said he employed some 150 people
And not one of them is a chauffeur? How nouveau riche 🧐

• #517
You'd think it would be worth it for someone with as many infractions as that guy.

“The officers drove up to his car and saw he was using his mobile phone. He told the officers he was "in communication with his wife"”
As in “I’m dehydrated”. No, you’re thirsty.
“I’m hypoglycaemic” No, you’re hungry.
“I was in communication.” No, you’re driving while using your phone.
Fuck off and die you cunt.
As in “fuck of and die you cunt.” -

Was a bit miffed yesterday when I let an oncoming van through at a narrow bridge and he didn't thank me, as he went past I realised he couldn't thank me because he was yapping on his phone. Dashcam picked it up nicely and sent footage off to the local police tonight. Fingers crossed for 6 points going his way.

One front page describes is as 'missing a red light whilst on phone'
-

Not only did he miss a red light he cut up a police car. 9 points before this, unreal.
"Edward Fitzalan-Howard was stopped by police on 7 April after officers spotted him using the device as his BMW cut across their vehicle after going through a red light in Battersea, south-west London, said the prosecutor, Jonathan Bryan."
I don't own a car anymore, but when I did, I've had 30+ message long back and forth conversations with @spotter , as an example, without touching my phone or even the Carplay screen. The only thing you couldn't do was view images, so it would say 'Spotter has sent an image' and I'd say 'As you know, I'm driving so I can't look at that right now, but will do soon.'
Sometimes, voice to text wasn't perfect, but there was rarely a time where Spotter couldn't figure out what I was saying.
