  • man up
get the 15...... the 16 will give you three skid patches ... you'll be wearing your tyres very quickly with 48/16 48 divided by 16 = 3

i think thats how skid patches work

  • in this chart the higher the better 1 is very very bad !

oh maybe it's just the one ? i.e. if you skid ( which on a 48/16 would be quite manly ) you'll just skid on the same patch every time

rear wheel rotates 3 times for every turn of the cranks

  • Ah ok, i see, in honesty a lot of that has just gone over my head. I presume this doesn't still apply if you're not running it fixie and it's just single speed ?

Also, you got any thoughts on putting spacers and single speed onto a cassette hub ?

  • oh your single speed ... so in fact it won't make any difference to you
continue on as you were !

  • Haven't dared attempt fixie yet. Doing another build which I think ill give a go as a fixie though so ill bare the diagram and tips in mind for that one :-)

  • Re-routed cabling for anyone who's interested. Found some cool braded-look casing as well... i think it looks spot on (just ignore the light)

  • Whats up with the finishing tape..?

  • Insulation tape ... ha. Any ideas where i can get some decent stuff ?

  • I think he means why is there so much of it.
nothing wrong with the tape itself, btw

  • Ah, shit first effort at wrapping bars is the only excuse. Ran out of tape way too early.

  • It looks like you overlapped it too much.
Might be worth trying it again: Practice makes perfect.

  • If you're attempting it again, best to do it without peeling the backtape off.

There's quite a lots of overlap on the drop, but it does look quite tidy so not too bad for your first effort.

  • Right guys, want to ask a huge favour if anyone would mind ... I've got all the bits and bobs ready and sorted to get this bike back to it's original form and i'm in desperate need of some assistance with fitting things so wondered if someone would be able to help in return for some beer tokens ??

    I've got:
-Crank that i listed before on here
-Set of lovely mavic box rims
-The original box rim from the back (with gears on)

I'd really need some help firstly in getting the crank off - as it's stuck on from the drive side (threads are screwed). I've been told that i could maybe hit the axel through and take the crank off that way ??? I'll be honest though i'm really not sure how to do this or if it's even possible.

I want to fit a spacing kit ideally to the original box rim with a single speed cog on. I did pop it in to Halfrauds to try and get the gears off and they said they haven't got a tool that will get them off as it's an odd size. I'm aware that they are crap in there but i'm currently in High Wycombe and there isn't anywhere else.

Really i just need someone to help me get the new crank on and then hoepfully someone who can advise on a spacing kit...where to buy and how to fit (although i'm sure that's fairly simple). Got a nice set of amber wall tires to go on as well and so keen to get it fixed up to it's original crowning glory as i'm moving into London next week.

I'm going to be in Balham from friday night all the way through next week so any help would be really really great !!!!!

  • If it's an old style BB, I reckon you could remove the fixed cup and crank from the NDS, then unscrew the drive side part of the BB and take the whole lot out on the drive side without removing the drive side crank from the spindle. You'd have to buy pretty much a whole new BB (£20 max for the tester approved Shimano BB-UN55) though.

  • Right, so i finally got round to getting the old crank cut off and new one put on. Excuse the crap pics but just to give you guys an idea. Before anyone says anything yes i know that the tires are different, wheels are different and seat post isn't silver....they're on the list of things to do ! The cable ties and wires roudn the seat post will be going too as i don't need the 2 HID lamps on the front any more. Any comments / criticism welcome !

  • Look great.

Don't you feel like you're sliding forward all the time with the saddle at that angle?

  • Yea slightly ed, but it's either that or it's a bit of a ballcrusher !! Will mess around with the seat angle once i get the silver seat post sorted out, the current clamp is pretty budget as well so that's on the to go list !

  • if it's a ballcrusher, lower it a tad.

  • Re: bartape overlap, I hope this gives you some idea how much overlap you can get away with. You can make out the edge of the tape underneath the top layer:

I notice you've used tape with perforations (Fizik??) I find you can use the edge of the perforations as a good guide for alignment, i.e. line up the edge of the next wrap just outside the perforations on the last wrap, if that makes any sense?

I also think duct tape/insulation tape makes perfect end tape (as above), and you just need a single width for a neat finish.

  • Cheers Phil, yea i broke the bank with some fizik. I'll give that a go once i've got all the other bits and bobs sorted and post some other pics !

  • One more pic before the seat post goes. Anyone got any thoughts on maybe a brown suede turbo saddle on here ? Or stick with the brooks ?

  • Up to you on whichever is comfortable.

  • Finally finished. Next Project is something geared to ride to amsterdam on in the summer so if anyone has anything kicking around to sell please let me know !!

  • Hi all, back again. So after riding at Herne Hill yesterday i really want to turn this fixed and brakeless and give it a blast on the track. It's much lighter than the one i rented and think it would be a great laugh.

Before going out and buying a new wheel i wondered if anyone in London has a rear box rim, or something similar, that's got a track hub on that would maybe want to swap for a single speed ? It doesn't have to be of great quality but i'd love to get it all sorted before next Friday's team blast again on the track !!
