  • I'm not German (nor rich) enough to understand you probably refer to Porsche?

  • It's not a good analogy either...

  • I really think shimano have lost their way with Dura Ace, again. 9100 is really not great.

    7800 great
    7900 dog shit
    9000 great
    9100 meh

  • Ok, so 9000 is great? I rode 7400 and 7800 and these were great (ofcourse, 7400 was still an early "STI" groupset with some downsides).

  • 9000 to boldly go...

  • Señor_Bear, very much agree. I find their crank-chainring transitions, in particular/emblematically, have been getting more sloppy with every gen.
Just don't get their design process, there's an obvious leap between renderings and final product.

    Sig_Arlecchino, Telekom Corsa looks great.
Had the chance to ride a mint 7800 recently, was very pleasantly surprised.

  • Well, they‘re both fairly modern from a technical pov, their aesthetics split opinions and they can be had cheaper than both their predecessors and successors.

  • Nothing is universal when it comes to looks but I'd think 7800 is proportionally more popular than the 996. That may be my own tastes or prejudices talking I guess.

  • Never forget that 7800 had this guy too.

  • Condor had one in stock for years... Probably still do.

  • Was 7800 perhaps the first group/gen with external bb cups?

  • Nothing is universal when it comes to looks but I'd think 7800 is proportionally more popular than the 996. That may be my own tastes or prejudices talking I guess.

It's an interesting comparison, which stands up in some ways but not in others I think.

The 996 was demonstrably a technically better car than the 993, and 7800 was a technical step forward. For the 996 that technical edge (and the 996 moved the game on far, far more than 7800 did in it's sphere) wasn't enough to overcome Those Headlights.

Ironically the 997 "fixed things" by going back two generations - so it's as if 7900 looked like a fat version of 7700, leaving 7800 as an avant-garde orphan in terms of it's design within the range.

  • You guys seen this video on youtube? Instantly thought of this sub. Welded disc brake mounts on an on steel frame - ultimate MGOOF.

  • I don’t think that’s in the spirit of this thread.

  • hahaha really! well sir I do apologise I got the vibe check wrong! I just thought it was cool and thought others might... What makes you say that anyway? The fact its a video? Someone else's bike? The physical frame mod too sacrilegious?

  • ultimate MGOOF.

It's a shit frame to start with, and welding disc tabs on those forks is dodgy at best if not dangerous.

  • I thought it was an odd choice too. A frame worthy of the frame builders torch would have been easy to get hold of.

  • Ah but it's a laugh tho ennit mate

  • The frame will go straight in the bin now, which seems a bit wasteful. Hey ho.

  • Just when you thought they’d run out of click bait ideas for videos....

  • The almost distain with which they refer to the retro bike as some sort of relic lowkey offends me.

Edit: sounds like they're going to chop it up in the next video to 'revive its geometry', make it stop!
