• Sounds like you'd be good at polo.

    repz

  • ^^^ i agree, responsibility resides with the rider behind. though like riding too close to parked car doors there are changes we can make to our own behaviour that may help reduce the risk

  • Both girls have been packed off to hospital in an ambulance in tears, one with a dislocated shoulder that looked and sounded extremely painful. Ho hum. Feel pretty shitty about the whole affair and need to examine my riding style a bit more.

You could rename yourself 'bothbadly' in tribute to them.

    But yes, it's their fault.

  • hilarious, forum rider admits that they did something wrong or at least could have done something better and puts two other riders in hospital and the forum tells her that everything is okay.

  • Innit. Not really that easy to apportion blame to everybody else when you're standing in the middle of the road surrounded with the carnage you've just caused.

Anyhow, I am going to take up TTM's suggestion of using hand signals when slowing. I used to do this but stopped because I felt a bit weird doing it on my commute. I'd rather feel a bit weird than hospitalise random people, though.

From actually reading the description of the incident it sounds like at least one of the other riders was responsible for putting themselves or both riders in hospital.

It's a shame an incident resulted in a hospital jaunt, but you can't legislate against nodders, of which CS7 seems to attract a healthy number.

  • Ach, we all know that if you can't stop in the distance you can see to be clear, you're too fast or too close. Don't feel bad about the accident. Sympathy for the hospitalisation is understandable.

  • Sorry can't agree with you Jonny. So we're now supposed to look out for u-turning taxis, suiciding peds, random car doors, buses, Addison Lee, white van man, James Martin and the nodder behind going too fast for the conditions or trying to undertake? Bollocks! Bothwell obviously feels bad and wishes to learn something from it, but there's no question of he/she being in the wrong.

I indicate... however, I was indicating hand back - slow down whilst going past a bike accident with police and ambulance in attendance and I had 3 lycra clad lads overtake me putting themselves into oncoming traffic. I think one of the lads was even over taking the one overtaking me. Sometimes people just have to get past...

  • So it's true, fixed gear riders should have a brake light so other cyclists know when they are slowing down.

  • no you just need to unclip and take your feet off the pedals so they see that you are intending to coast to a stop.

  • hilarious, forum rider admits that they did something wrong or at least could have done something better and puts two other riders in hospital and the forum tells her that everything is okay.

Of course not everything is OK, but it wasn't her fault (in which I obviously assume that her description is true, of which I have no doubt).

  • I would argue that it was in part my fault as it was my stopping that physically caused the collision

FWIW I was also riding single speed rather than fixed so my brake lights were technically working if we're going down that road again (which we shouldn't)

  • built like a bothwell shithouse

maybe you shouldn't of given way, this is london afterall and people aren't expecting considerate behaviour while they are in commute mode. I think regardless of the reason one is stopping these two have to look at themselves, more so the girl on the right who struck you and hit the other. Which one hurt the shoulder, did you exchange numbers?

Pfft, you could have been stopping for any reason from monster pot hole to grandma to injured duck in the road. It's the repsonsibility of the person following to be able to come to a stop suddenly.

  • True. Still, though. I'm a firm believer in modifying my own behaviour to head off problems as I can't rely on anybody else to be modifying theirs.

^^ The one with the shoulder was the one who was undertaking and got wiped out by the first one. I didn't exchange details with the two girls as I was too busy placating and reassuring and moving bikes out of the road, then kind of went into shock a bit, I suppose, and didn't think to do it. I did stick around for the popo to arrive and take a statement (but fuck knows what they'll do with it, probably lose it :/ )

  • @DJ - the driver is legally obliged to give you their name, adress and insurance details, at the scene. Personally I would have said "Well you can not give me your insurance details if you want, but I'm going to call 999 if you leave the scene without giving them to me to report you".

    It says here:
    http://www.which.co.uk/cars/driving/driving-advice/what-to-do-if-you-have-a-car-accident/immediately-after-a-car-accident/

Call 999 straight away if someone leaves the scene of the car accident without giving their details.

Erm, well yes, because that's how defensive cycling works. You can not look out for all of those things if you want, but I don't want to get hurt so I'm sure going to.

  • @DJ - the driver is legally obliged to give you their name and address, at the scene.

Fixed that - swapping insurance details is not required.

  • A note to all

In the interest of keeping this thread on topic, can you please take the discussions of blame apportionment and/or riding etiquette to somewhere more appropriate.
This thread is for the reporting of witnessed minor incidents and/or notifications of forum riders who have been involved in a Road Traffic Incident. .

  • Ninja edit, Object's right

  • I've just had to delete 2 posts made after my request to keep this thread on topic.
The posts may have contained some decent points but this is not the place.

  • No idea what happened really, maybe my front brake snatched or something but I managed what I'm convinced was a spectacular forward somersault over the bars landing into a 10/10 forward roll last night turning right at a mini roundabout in Highgate. The guy in the car waiting to get onto the roundabout looked rather surprised as though he wasn't expecting for me to be sitting down on the road next to his bumper.

One tiny scratch on my elbow, a bit of a bruise above my right buttcheek and that's it. Still not quite sure what happened, but I think the long and short of it was that I was going too fast.

  • My first proper incident this evening. At the roundabout outside Lewisham station, giving way to oncoming traffic I was rear ended by a BMW. Driver's first words were "I'm a cyclist too!", we exchanged details and I'll get bike into the shop tomorrow. My ass hurts from the saddle being driven into my glutes at speed, but hopefully nothing a bit of ice (and vodka) won't sort.

I kind of forgot all the things I was supposed to do, like get witness details. Hopefully none will be needed.

  • Sorry to hear that - hope you're ok, and that the bike is fine also.
