Lots of chat here about folks getting knocked off bikes by cars. Anyone been floored by another cyclist? Happened to me albeit at an off road event. Thought I was fine until 2 days later when I could no longer walk - partial displacement of hip caused tendons to tighten over hip bursar, which then swelled up. still gives me hassle.

Had a very similar incident with a moped on the bottom of Camden road just after mornington crescent. I was in the bus lane and he turned left and swiped across me leaving me absolutely nowhere to go. Luckily I wasn't clipped in and managed to slow down enough so I just touched him at low speed, we both wobbled a bit but neither came off.
Pizza delivery boy. He said to me didn't you see me indicate? he'd indicated as he started turning and clearly hadn't looked around. I lost it, made no difference at all, he was convinced he was right. The thing I took from that was that you need to concentrate and anticipate 100% of the time on the bike - there are some proper stupid arseholes out there on every form of transport, even foot. They won't change, so you have to be really aware.

I hit the base of a traffic cone which was in the middle of the road on Evelyn Street, Deptford. As I fell I was strangely aware that I was about to bang my head and glad I had a bash hat on. Minor abrasions to me, though my bike and clothing did not come off so lightly. Wrecked rear mech (only replaced on Saturday) scratched brake levers, bar tape scraped, remote battery pack clip snapped, hole in brand new bib tights, and as I said, I gave the helmet a good bash.
Fairly obvious where the cone base came from. The roadworks adjacent.
I wonder how good my BC membership is?

^^ anyone on a scooter with L-plates (which includes all of those pizza delivery kiddies) should set your alarm bells ringing the instant you see them. Stay well clear, hang back, whatever.

Here's the damage:

I nipped through some cones as a shortcut and ran straight into a big roadwork trench, went over the bars and landed on face/elbows. Couldn't really move after, some nice folks stayed with me and called police. Got taken to cop shop and give a cuppa, then ambulance arrived and checked me over. They reckoned I've chipped a tiny piece off my arm bone. But the hospital waiting times were enormous and so I signed a disclaimer and got a cab home. I'm at work today and feeling sore, but I think all's well. Wheel is badly buckled, possibly rim is ruined, but forks look OK.
Moral of the tale: cones are there for a reason.

Ouch. Not sure which hospital you went to but I would consider heading over to the university college hospital by warren street if at all possible. My A&E experience there was very quick and the doctors seemed very good. I was in and out in 45 minutes.

I didn't go, wasn't really planning on it - can't be bothered with the waiting.

If you've chipped a bone its worth getting it x rayed dude. htfu and all that can gtfo when it comes to this stuff. The sooner they find something, the better your chances of a speedy recovery.

Few months ago I came off and hurt my wrist. I couldnt be bothered to get it checked out. Some folks off here convinced me I should go to A&E. But I went thinking I was wasting my time. Turns out I had snapped my left scaphoid in my wrist and ended up being in a cast for 6 weeks followed by another 6 weeks of rehab.

I guess that rules you out of taking up scaphoiding as a career

Fair point. I'm going to get out of work and head to the drop-in centre for a once-over. Any chance I'll be home before 10pm, do you reckon?
-
• #141
Nope, but you should do it anyway. I still have a permanently bent thumb from not going after hurting myself falling over on Holloway Road. Was broken, it turns out.

Evenings are busiest. It shouldn't take more than a few hours though.
Whatever you do, don't go to st thomas...

That's the one I was going to - I live nearby. Where's best?

UCH, right by warren street station, worth the extra mileage.
I went to St Thomas first and spent the evening being shouted at by drunk homeless people and the doctors didn't seem to care.

Head north over waterloo bridge around the strand up drury lane to tottenham court road. Its at the end of that by warren street

Just been to UCH A&E. The guy said it'd be three hours. Then he advised me to take two paracetamol and have a couple of beers at home instead. Pointless.

I work in UCH A+E x-ray dept. Usually good but the triage nurse sounds a bit dismissive.
Wish I'd seen this earlier. I would have had you seen, x-rayed and out in 30mins. Not much good to you now but I can smooth the journey through A+E at any point if the arm keeps giving you grief?

• #148
Thanks, but I think it's all ok. Was just looking for some piece of mind. Odd coincidence. Do you ever X-ray yourself for fun?

Fuck, that was a daft move mate! I'm glad you're ok though mate. Heal up soon!

I find it hard to argue against this.

Not sure where to post this but a cab driver stopped abruptly in front of me and indicated left to park his car. Upon doing this, I stopped to look behind to see if it would be safe for me to overtake and he started to reverse into me and had hit me. I was fine and so was my bike but I thought I would warn people anyway. The incident was today 21/11/2012 at about 20:10. on Exhibition Road, South Kensington near the Imperial College bicycle parking area. The license plate (as far as I can remember) is LB56 UJK
