had a long chat with jonathan. nice guy
he or any of his colleagues havent had any hub flange issues with chris king either. he recommended several other hubs but i think my mind is made. -

I'd be interested what he had to say about hubs and what he recommended .. If you don't mind posting an OT summary. I've had a quote from him for the same build on GoldTec hubs but need to ring him Monday to discuss as my minds not made up but my budget maybe!

I have R45 King hubs in my road bike and they have been really great so far, run 28/28, DT Competitions in the rear as I'm 210lb or so.

I've ordered some R45's laced to Hed Ardennes with CX-Rays. It's gonna be an expensive mistake if it all falls apart.
Out of curiousity where from? I wanted to build some CK hubs on Ardennes rims but was told that HED wouldn't sell the rims separately. That will be a might fine set of wheels btw.

Winstanleys BMX do R45s laced to Ardennes rims as a wheelset:

Oh yeah. Thanks. A quick google has revealed quite a few places offering them actually. Hmmm. Time for a rethink. Thanks.

They aren't in stock anywhere, but if you email them they can be ordered. I think the various bike shops / website order from this distributor:

£891 for R45's on A23's is crazy expensive, Even with CX-Rays.
Those Strada fellas are nice, but pricey. -

Bromley Cycles are the sister company to the importers. If you have trouble getting any CK stuff, just go to them :)

Damn I like the archetype rims.

Bromley Cycles were fucking useless when I needed some CK parts.

Right... which if I recall was that you purchased a headset for your 29er from an entirely different store, and you want to keep the top bit, but swap the bottom part for a tapered one... preferably without cash being involved, but at the very least you only wanted to buy just the half you didn't have because you'd purchased the wrong one (the non-tapered).
And then when they can't help, your response is to slander them here... for your error.
I'm all up for naming and shaming consistently bad bike shops, but isolated anecdotes are just that and given that this one wasn't even their fault you were only asking them on the off-chance... so that's hardly them being fucking useless.

No, I had bought the correct headset for the fork I had, like any online consumer I bought it for the best available price.
When I upgraded to a tapered fork I needed to change the bottom cup. This is a part that can be purchased. I contacted them and they were not interested in ordering this in for me.
Given they are the sister shop of the distributor this did not seem very helpful. I was more than willing to pay for the part, was under no illusion regarding this.
The part is technically available for sale, but then when I approached Chris King directly they were useless too. They gave me the part code and told me to go to Aspire Velotech, who then ordered one for me. What Chris King had failed to tell me was they had none in stock and there was a long lead time for the new ones to be made.
Thankfully Cane Creek are aware that people bought headsets for over sized head tubes but to take 1.5" forks, but as tapered forks became more readily available you may wish to upgrade.
Hence why I still have a Chris King top cup, but now have a Cane Creek bottom cup.
I am not sure what my error was, other than hoping to be able to buy a part that is technically available for retail and for the distributor/retail outlet to possibly help order the part in.
I should also note that when I wanted some other Chris King parts Bromley bikes were actually helpful, and sent them out very quickly. So a 50/50 experience from them.

Right... talk about a derail... so the only part of your post relevant to this thread is that things are not as black and white as your original statement implied, and that viewing things from a reasonable standpoint, no reasonable person would've interpreted Bromley to have been fucking useless.
In fact, Bromley couldn't have helped you since it wasn't available, but on other occasions have helped fully and promptly. Glad we cleared that up.
There wasn't a reason to wade in with the worst possible interpretation of a shop's service. Such comments can really do harm to a small business, if you knew the margins a bike shop really makes and balance that with the influence of a forum like LFGSS... well, we'd all be wiser to watch our words.

Not my experience it has to be said. They couldn't have been more helpful with my order for parts and a frame .. they even went as far as to ring me and let me know they had dispatched, even though the system had sent me mails.

ordered the hubs, actually quite nervous about them as my mechanical knowledge is toilet yet according to the chris king maintenance guide i need to ride them for a bit and then check everything is ok gulp. do the folk that have these find they need any babysitting, are they easy to adjust etc
sorry for the late reply oswald but i think it would be best to have a chat with him yourself about your requirements. the one common theme across all the wheel builder folk i spoke to is that shimano dura ace is rock solid and perhaps the most reliable choice of all the hubs. bold statement? this is purely down to the volume of hubs they manufacture with the only downside being that the freehub is not a replaceable part (in the eyes of shimano)

No worries splutter .. I actually did talk to Jonathan on Monday (yesterday) and found him very helpful. I ordered the GoldTec, A23 and CX Ray build he quoted me .. bit more wallet friendly then the CK hubs

awesome.
Nice wheelset... but what was the question? Did they fail to answer it? I figured you would've said "Have you had any problems with the R45's, and would you recommend other hubs instead?".
