nice one - thanks for replying so quickly

Resurrecting this one, looking to convert an old Juna tri spoke from rear to front. Shimano HG freehub, but it looks like it may be removable?
-

Mechanic in the bike shop concurred it is not removable.
How do you convert the old screw-on ones then? just replace the axle?

Yes, you just need a shorter and thinner axle, most of the trispoke hubs are narrow enough to fit inside 100mm OLN

Great thanks a lot.

Fingers crossed by the end of the week, one of Rad's aerospokes will arrive to me from Poland. It's a four-spoke rather than a tri, but it takes a screw-on freewheel.
When converting to a front wheel, what will I need to be careful of? I hope that even with the bike shop's help it will be easy - take off the freewheel cassette, remove the axle unit, and replace with the new front axle. Am I missing anything?
Also, will a front axle like this be alright? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/120804431005
Recommendations for a better front axle appreciated, or maybe I go for the bog standard (inflated priced) they have in the shop

You haven't told us what kind of bearings the proposed wheel has.
-
• #35
Still waiting to see in the flesh, but judging by its age I'm hoping for something simple -https://www.lfgss.com/conversations/270079/newest/
Rad wasn't sure on specifics, so we're still working on part whim, part hope.

Depends. Is it a standard cup and cone affair?
Take it apart, take pictures. Post online.
Forget to put back together. Lose bits. Smash it up in a fit of rage. End up homeless.

You've seen my Specialized trispoke then :-)

So... that looks like it might be more difficult than expected...

In the bike shop now, he'll have a look at stripping out as much of the hub as possible by monday afternoon (too busy to do it today). Maybe this stays as a rear, unless something hacks at that old chunk of metal
-
• #41
what are you trying to acomplish? make that a front? whats on there other side? whats the problem?
-
• #42
I'd like it as a front wheel, yea. That big lump of metal to space the wheel is the problem. I don't think it comes off, which means the wheel won't get down to front axle spacing, and if it did it would be well off-centre.
-
• #43
why are you trying to remove that? generally to convert a freewheel spok to front you remove freewheel and swap the axle
-
• #44
Because it looks like it measures too wide with that. Mechanic eyed it and said it would be too wide.
I've asked the mech to strip down the hub best he can. We're not sure what kind of old bearings system it has, because after removing freewheel and NDS cone/end the axle didn't fall out. So it may be sealed bearings or something weird.
On Monday I'll have a look in the bike shop.

I think instead of spending loads of money and time on the hope of getting a bargain aero front wheel, you should just research, save up and buy a proper one. Every project of yours seems to be a bodge which doesn't quite work out.
-
• #46
Every project? bodge? What are you basing your conclusions on?
-
• #47
Off the top of my head: This wheel, the previous attempt (Juna?) to convert a rear trispoke and the disc covers that don't fit properly.
-
• #48
Disc covers fit fine on the deeper section wheel, just popped them on the wrong wheel to get them home. Juna wasn't bodged, had it serviced and left it as a rear after it was confirmed not possible. As for this one, we'll see what happens.

i would take some real measurements and not trust eyeball...

Got the wheel back from the bike shop, they were way too conservative and didn't want to risk damage. Got home and tapped the axle with a toffee hammer, and the covers and bearings came out just fine. So now it's axle-less until the ebay purchase arrives.
Width of the hub, including fat spacer block on NDS, is roughly 80mm, so that should give me some space to get the wheel centered.
Will update later this week if it does/doesn't work out.
Look at my "Tester's T3" thread and you'll see the custom front axle I had made for a Hed3. Basically, you need to do the same thing but with appropriate diameters and spacing to suit the bearings in your wheel.
