OK. So do they still have any links to actual modern masonry? And/or do they still keep alive the trade secrets of the medieval cathedral builders?*

And what's the 'free' bit all about too?

(*I'm particularly curious to know if the cathedral builders knew the neat trick for solving static compression load paths by building an up-side-down model so compression becomes tension and the parts move toward their stable equilibria.)

I think it is the ancient form of free as in free born (eg born into slavery or bound to a feudal landowner)

Sounds pretty similar to Merchant tailors. My ex-girlfriend got accepted to be an apprentice a few months ago as she went to the school oop north. They mainly do charity work/have big dinners and 'network'. She got 3 interview offers at her first meeting. They also wanted her to start a girlband.
