  • Le wheels have become an issue for my kingpin project. the standard wheel set is of the chrome steel 451 variety......and the BMX wheels nessesitate mahoosive brake drops.....quality 451 wheels/rims any one?

been thinking about putting 24" wheel set in there for ultra tight clearances an ting.

  • That'll make things a lot easier, cheers. Was considering 75's, but that might be a bit much....

  • I'll be using BMX wheels and drop bolts. The cheapest option, and easy enough.

  • did you make the drop bolts lae?

  • No not yet, the wheels haven't arrived so I can't make a drawing for them.

I'll be doing it properly, mind; not some thin bit of ally sheet bolted together a la Sheldon - far too flexy. I'll make some nice teardrops from 4mm steel, bang the tops with a hammer so they fit the curve of the forks, then weld in a bit of tube to carry the brake bolt/mudguard tab. Then bolt to the frame. Or maybe weld to the frame. Or both. Or weld cantilever mounts on and use V-brakes.

  • Those anklebiters are for kids' racing though; and have some ridiculously low max rider weight recommendation.
Obviously hipster shoppers won't be quite so rough as the young 'uns, but still I'd go for the 32 or 36h option.

  • Ah yeah true. I'm quite slim so the weight limits wouldn't matter too much to me.

Sjs cycles have some sun cr18s for 34.99 each, in 28 hole as well. Shouldn't have any weight issues with them and again means you can save the original hubs, especially useful if you wanna keep the 3 speed on the back rather than having to buy a newer one with more spoke holes.

  • this looks very interesting.

  • Excellent idea. Shame it won't work on the rear, but the flex of the front brake is the more safety-critical of the two anyway.

    I think Sun make a 451 rim - The Cr18 I think.

  • Great thread.

  • how did you make the picture work?

the green is a coventry eagle bought in bourne lincolnshire in 77 and made it back to deeping st james in 2012 for 35 dorra

  • how did you make the picture work?

Right click>view image in new tab, then copied URL as normal.

  • I have a Dawes Kingpin with a set of these waiting to go on.

  • ^ gee knee us!

  • That's custom riders in hitchin! I used to get all my sk8 stuff there back in the days of yore....cool nice to know its still running

  • Re wheels / rims I was looking at velocity and they have looooooaaaads. Including niche sizes that would work with a kingpin. Is there a way to get around BLB? Last time I spoke to them about getting the hi-viz version of the Dyad and if you're doing special orders there's a extra cost (~£40 from memory).

That said this anckle bitters look very good value and a good fit.

  • ^ has anyone found out about the limits of those anklebiters? as I am a fat fucker

  • Finally took a photo of the Kingpin looking very urban.

After some hooning round the underground car park of my building. There are more Ferraris in this car park than bicycles (well, there's only one bike - this one); I don't think anyone's going to nab it. The Ferrari-owners flats must be much nicer than mine...

The cranks I bought look like they've had a self-tapping screw screwed into the first few mm of the tapers... luckily it doesn't look like it'll affect their fitting onto the spindle. I emailed the ebay seller and got £20 partial refund, though, so that's good, especially considering that cranks+bb only cost £35. New wheels still haven't arrived...

  • I've been riding round the Kingpin stock for the last couple of days - it's pretty good; a fair bit quicker than the Raleigh Twenty.

I've measured the original cranks which are exactly 7" or 177mm (I suppose this gives more sensible gearing since old 3-speeds always seem to be geared too high). I've also discovered that it uses 500A wheels, not 20 x 1 3/8 - 440mm rather than 451mm. So with the cranks being bigger than I thought, and the wheels being smaller, it means that fitting BMX wheels (assuming slightly taller tyres) and 165mm cranks will actually result in slightly more crank clearance, not less. So no worries about clipping pedals whilst cornering.

  • Looking good.

It's funny yours also has the dynamo bottle on the drive side even though there's a bottle mount on the NDS.

After riding mine a bit more and weighing spend up against other projects I think I'm going to put any mods to mine on hold. Which is a shame as much only critiszim is the weight (15kg).

  • Heh, as it happens I weighed mine last night - as it stands, it's 14.7kg. Not bad actually, considering it has steel everything and a dynamo.

I also worked out that I need a 450mm seatpost, which is a bit of a bastard expense. I'm trying to find a secondhand one, but they're uncommon.

I also noticed that the brakes were Weinmann 730s, not 500s. These are the long-drop ones... so when I get the 406 wheels fitted, there won't be any brakes that reach (I was initially planning on finding some cheap Alhonga super-deep-drop ones but even these won't fit now). Drop bolts it is, then.

Just ordered a 450mm seatpost and a shim, taking the total spend up to £120. BMX wheelset has also arrived, so I'm on the lookout for tyres and I'll have to think about making up some drop-bolts. Still not sure where to go with the paint on this... original paint or raw steel are free. I really need to sell the unwanted bits to offset some of the cost.

  • I'd leave the paint for now. Wait until you've got the whole thing running as you want it. Then make that call.

Also I think the black looks quite smart.

  • It's blue! But yeah, I'll most likely be keeping the paint. Navy blue + silver/polished components looks quite smart, as you say. I'll see if I can find some cheap whitewall tyres.
