  • A more budget option would be the Planet X skewers.

  • 80 euro for one front quick release skewer :o

ww-projects aren't cheap. but i love this project and i don't have any others at the moment.

cheaper, but twice the weight :)

  • True, but is 10g worth the huge price difference? There's better ways to shave grams.

    This.

Its about the fun of the project :-)

Im loving the banter. This is good info.

  • Another lighter option is the Tune Skyline skewers, though they aren't quick release and require a tool to remove them. This would make them a slightly more track friendly alternative and they're cheaper than the U20s.

  • For a front only this would be my choice at the moment .. (cost vs weight) http://r2-bike.com/carbon-ti-x-lock-mtb-rear

  • ^ I'd just buy the pair of Planet X skewers as they work out cheaper and lighter (and better looking) than them.

i spent quite a lot of time today to get an overview about the market (eg good and bad things (esp. about the tune skyline), prices and so on) and came to the decision with the tune u20. to be honest i don't care about the price and also why sould i change such a simple thing and make compromises?
as i said, i love this (my) project...

I'd go for these, fixed bikes look complete rubbish with quick release.

  • ^^ I'm just adding to the discussion. Not everyone who reads through this thread may be willing to drop so much money on a quick release and hopefully my more budget alternatives will help them out.

Problem I have with the Planet X (and all the generic skewers of this design) is the cam runs on an aluminium surface. In terms of weight this is my top 4 .. btw I picked number 4 for my road bike!

    Skyline 17.5g 85Euro .. U20 21g 158Euro .. Carbon Ti superlight 31g 78Euro .. KCNC 44g 45 Euro per set

that's fine. but then they shoudl read the bad things about the tune skylines too. the main problem is that there's too much space between the screw and the screwer key. you only have to open/clos them 3-5 times and then both will loose their edges.

  • I personally run the Planet X skewers on all my quick release wheelsets and they do exactly what I expect of them and haven't given me any grief. I can't justify buying a lighter alternative as the cost/weight savings isn't worth it in my eyes.

I wasn't aware of the issues with the Skylines, I've only read a bit about them on WW and they seemed more focused on if the weight of the tool should be included in the overall weight of the skewer set.

  • can we have a little classified section that links to this thread.

as all you weight weenies save your micrograms, surely you'll be selling off the lead piping QR's and the solid gold seatposts

as i'm not weight weenie-ing anytime soon i'd be more than happy to mop up all the old heavy crap you are removing from your bikes at a vastly reduced price of course !

+1 I use these, they work well and are a decent weight.

  • Bolt on is the way to go for weight weenie track bikes:

11g with steel bolts, would be ~7g with Ti bolts, and cheap too.

  • this thread is the most epic trollfest.

    15 pages, no bike.

  • Aaaah! Poor wittle Apollo... Just cause its not moving wike you want, you think it's a trollfest.

Perhaps the meme threads better for you;-)

  • I got nerged for not posting a build pic after 3 pages!

    CB nerged.

  • Cause your thread wasn't interesting.

Now smoke THAT in your pipe!

  • ouch.

  • It's going to happen soon. I'll be ordering the f&f shortly. Get the other bits soon enough:-)

  • which f+f?
