  • Very sexy - too many gears mind ;)

  • Does it move freely? As in the the handlebar turn when you lifted the bike

  • Does it have a lock-out? Does it work? If not the damper has ejected its oil.

Probably doesn't matter to much for a pub bike - only thing I'd care about is smooth movement of the telescope. If it's graunchy it means it's rusted.

  • Reader's wife. Had to post as an appreciation anniversary thing :P / they don't built em like this anymore style - winter's over and still standing took a lot of bumps and falls across all types of terrain but this thing was built to last ... rims getting a bit worn and the bb will get a regrease.

Hubs do take a lot of maintenance - ultegra 6700 :( once every 3-4 muddy rides.. not Cannondale specific but id say anyone not willing to repack constantly better stay away from certain shimano hubs for cx.

Rims are CXP 22s - they were stragiht / new a year ago .. rear is starting to bend. Previous wheels were some odd Mavic Classics Pro - should have never sold em :P

  • regreasing and tightening the headset is not that hard :) do take it to a shop if you're not sure but i'd say pack it up thick - don't over tighten check for play then just slowly work towards no play... allso feel the bearings they might be worn.

  • BTW new or old bike?

  • New bike. Turns fairly freely, slight less freely to the right hand side though.

Pretty sure the shop dude will do it for free - he said after chopping steerer to bring it back if there's any issues. Don't mind paying a few quid if not.

  • Sound like the mechanic bodged it up by not installing it back correctly\missing a piece, they'll sort it out for you for free.

  • Just had to sell off my Ti as 1 skint and 2 I have a tourer and a cx bike so a 'Audax' style do it all bike was always going to be a bit redundant, and now looking at trying to pick up a Caad 9/10/12 in my size.

Which of the three is best regarded and what's any pitfalls to look out for? I read somewhere that the Caad9 is 'better' as it's the last of the USA produced models.

  • And also, why are so many Cannondale owners totally deluded about the second hand prices-I've seen a couple of nice custom builds in my size with the owners asking about £500 over the odds for them and more even than some places are doing a Caad10 with 11spd Ultegra for. They do not seem to bend to either economics or reason...

Probably in a for sale advert for a USA produced frame I'd imagine.

They are all very good. The pre-10s don't really account for modern rim and tyre choices, and some are BB30 and some are not. Some have full carbon forks (premium) and some not (ultra).

Can't really go wrong with a CAAD10. Be aware you cant transfer warranties and what warranty they do have isn't exactly bomb proof.

Only other gotcha I can think of is that there were many versions of the CAAD8, the earlier ones being very racy and the later ones being noob bikes and having very little in common with their earlier brethren.

  • Looking for a 54 if you happen to see any...

  • This is good info, thanks. I'm not totally set on one but am keeping my eyes open for anything at the right price-other candidates are BMC/Canyon but all quite hard to find 2nd hand and therefore relatively spendy.

  • I have a USA Made CAAD 8 from 2005. It's excellent, in perfect condition and of the racy variety I believe. Picked up the frame from here for £150 if I remember correctly ( a 54cm too)
Has room for 28c tyres too. I built the bike with second parts and it was under the £500 mark.
    Here's a gratuitous pic:

I think mine was good value as there's nothing wrong with it and I prefer it to my 2010 BMC. hunt one down!

  • What size madone

  • 52cm but its H2 so stack 547 reach 379 vs CAAD10 54cm stack 546 reach 383. Series 5 from 2014, comes with DA9000 brakes and much extras.

  • What colour finishing kit for my CAAD12 - silver or black?

It's going to have to be Thomson due to the post diameter, and the other data point you might want to consider is that the cranks are these:

  • I saw that one and I like it but still seems a good 4-500 over priced versus a new CAAD10 with full 11spd ultegra at £1150 with warranty etc.

Lets see some pics of your madone then-think it'd be a wee bit wee for me anyway but you never know...

  • that's a very nice build-what's the final weight like?

  • will a CAAD9 not take 23mm rims then?

  • I think it can, but it's not designed for it. The frame design is circa 2004.

@Dammit has some photos of wide rims in his SystemSix which shares the CAAD9's rear triangle.
