due for delivery tomorrow.... excitement building!
Though I got stung on import duty, £1k 😦
I say "stung", I mean didn't get away with paying less than the correct amount... of course

found one... a 56 with the 2019 flatmount, thru axle fork, in purple... and i've bought it! Full Dura-ace groupo... shop soiled, but never ridden, so warranty for me too (if that's worth anything?!). Anyway, it was on US eBay, so i'm using a shipping service to get it to me, should take a couple of weeks... but by god i'm pleased! Was £2300.... not sure if i may have over paid? possibly a little....
I have one with rim brakes, absolutely beauty. These are hard to get now.

I'm in the market for my first road bike, my knees can't handle fixed any more and it's not too practical here in Tokyo for longer distances, and have my eye on an older CAAD. Anyone have any advice on sizing? I'm 5'11 and fairly normally proportioned, would I be looking at a 56cm?
Also, how bad are frames that have bubbling in the paint? Any reason this would be something to steer clear of... https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Cannondale-Caad3-Sram-Red-56cm/174338928571?hash=item289768efbb:g:Yx0AAOSw6~de71vm ?

CAADs come up large. 54 most likely.
I just sold a 52cm CAAD12. I'm 5'10, short legs, long body -

That's good to know, thanks, might give me more of a chance of finding one here then, generally larger bikes are hard to come by.

I'm 5'10" and perfectly happy on a 56 CAAD Optimo.

How's your arm length? I'm the same height/build as you and ride a 54 CAAD9 and would worry there wasn't enough stack on a 52 CAAD12 for me. I have short arms and would probably need a lot of spacers to get the bars where I like them. I've been on the lookout for 54 CAAD12 but I'm surprised to see how much more standover height there is than the 9.

Very slightly negative ape index (wingspan about 176cm, height about 178).
I had the CAAD12 54cm slammed with one of @gbj_tester's low headset covers.
Then I left the 25mm cone spacer on the 52cm CAAD12.I could fit either size tbh, but preferred a bit more seatpost so swapped the 54 for a 52 when I could.
I'm already slightly regretting selling the CAAD12 so been keeping an eye out for any 52 framesets that appear, and also pondering how the CAAD13 51 and 54 compares to the CAAD12 geometry-wise

Cheers, I'm definitely leaning towards a 52 then.
A 54 CAAD13 is only 3mm longer in reach but has 19mm more stack than a 52 CAAD12 so is probably bang on for me. Even if I could afford it I don't think I could stomach the looks though, especially as I'd be going rim brake.

CAAD is still the massive front-runner for new road bike. But two things continue to play on my mind -
BB30: Is this going to be as bad as lots of people make out? I removed, regreased and refitted BB for my current bike yesterday (threaded frame, GXP BB) and it was very straightforward. I'm a shocking mechanic, am I going to be entering a world of creaky pain?
Rim or disc: Again, really undecided on this. Want to 'future proof' this build as much as possible but had one experience with road discs before, on my current winter bike. SRAM Rival 1x hydro, they are NOISY in the wet, they don't really stop any better than decent calipers and they're a pain in the arse to maintain. Its a QR setup though and I have read/heard that newer hydro sets are a different experience. As above, love the simplicity and ease of a caliper brake and as this is a 'best' bike, I'll not be riding it too often in torrential rain. Bigger clearances and more options on tyre width also appeal with discs though.
Interested in thoughts on the above!

i would add weight gains to the downsides of discs. unless you are spending loads, at similar budget and lesser maintenance costs, a rim bike is lighter. happy to be corrected, which i am sure i will be

BB30.... I've had it on a caad10 and it was no problem at all until I got my LBS to refresh the bearings, then it was creak creak creak.... so I bought the tools from ebay (search burton bb30 tools) and followed their video and did the job myself and really took my time, and hey presto, no more creaking!!
I also had a caad 12, i got it frame only, fitted the bearings myself using my tools from above and again, took my time, and again no issue.
as for discs... only in really bad rain do they make a noise, in my experience at least, I would never go back to rim brakes now

Thanks, I thought the tools were a bit pricier than that so good to know.
For either rim/disc build it would hopefully be with Ultegra di2. The disc groupset obviously a bit more expensive, another factor.

• #12919
still heavier... if you use shimano or sram cranks you can use an adapter such as praxis which makes the potential creaks disappear
-
• #12920
If you've got bb30, you might as well take advantage of it and use 30mm cranks. I've had no BB30 creaks across 3 different bikes, one a caad12 disc.

Looking for 58 CAAD to build into something racier than my Litespeed Tuscany. I had a 2.8 20 years ago which I was stupid to get rid of. Anyway, there are a lot of 8s on eBay at the moment. How do they rate in the CAAD canon? I had 9 or 10 in mind, but willing to be persuaded...

BB30: Is this going to be as bad as lots of people make out?
No it's fine unless either you or your mechanic is a ham-fisted oaf.
-
• #12923
What is the benefit of a 30mm crank? I would ideally look to run a CAAD12 (if I can find it) or 13 with the standard ultegra chainset (hopefully R8050)

• #12924
I’d go disc. I really miss my caad12 disc sometimes. I don’t miss the 25.4 seat post though.
Similarly had 3 CannondaleS with BB30 and no problems

They're generally lighter and the larger axle is stiffer. Not something you'd notice but if it was built for it, why not use it?
Purple disc caad 12 on ebay, in a 54...
