  • Yeah I'd like to but don't have any other suitable wheel atm

  • Yes I fully understand cross chaining. But there's some other chain line issue

  • so with the bike in the stand, in big ring and 11t cog, when i pedal backwards the chain lifts slightly up on to the 12t sprocket. its more pronounced when in the granny ring and 11t.

I have a good few cannondale spacers left over so will try move the cranks around. Googling has brought up a few threads on weight weenies all saying theres some chain line issues with hollowgram but cant find anything with this specific problem.

  • Try another wheel? Might be some weirdness with the free hub / cassette combo you are using?

I'm wondering this now. I've got digital calipers and just measured up the chain line. It does seem to be 43.5mm. Its hard to measure into the mid point between chain rings but it does look to be correct.

Wheels are second hand, its maybe possible the axle was re-assembled incorrectly at some point. This could put the cassette out maybe.

  • i dont know etap but with di2 you will experience such problems when gears are not properly indexed

  • Yeah this was my first thought but rear derailleur is set up correctly, I went through the installation again this morning just to be sure. All aligned and limit screws set correctly etc

  • Back of the bike may also be bent towards the DS - proper misery if so however

  • Oh god, This crossed my mind this morning that the frame its self could be bent. I bought it through this very parish but bought it in good faith that the frame was fine, arrived with no damage to box etc no reason to think its damaged...

  • how would one check alignment of the frame its self?

  • There's a couple tools for it. A decent LBS should have them.

    Dropout alignment tool

    Frame alighnment tool

  • 50/50 on this one from IG:

  • ok nice.
Cranks are off now so moving spacers about. But I do realise moving the whole lot outboard will bring other issues like q factor and possible clearance issue with nds crank arm.

Its driving me nuts. Prime time to get out on the back roads right now...

  • I quite like that

  • It only seems less hideous because it's a small frame (physically less to offend you) and it's one colour (harder to identify which bit is ugliest).

  • So I switched some spacers around.

NDS had 7.5mm spacer which is now 5mm. DS had 2.5mm which is now 5mm.

So Ive moved the whole assembly out board by 2.5mm

Just rode up and down the street there and the slipping has stopped! Hurrah.

But... what issues has moving it 2.5mm outboard introduced? Should I really be worried much about it now or just be happy that its working the way I want it to but my feet are now 2.5mm out of position?

I don't really know much about q-factor and what it does or how it affects me to be honest. I'll have to google and read up on it.
I need articles explaining q-factor in simple terms for an idiot like me.

Never had issues like this with BSA and shimano gearing... :(

  • What’s the crank / chain stay clearance on the NDS like? If it’s fine you could counter the movement by cleat adjustments or pedal axle shims.

  • Nds crank is obvs now closer to chain stay.
Contact under flex might be a problem?
I'm not exactly a brick shit house but 85-90kg depending on the weather.

I'll get frame, drop out and gear hanger alignment checked anyway just incase. It seems strange that cannondale cranks don't integrate well with cannondale frame.
There must be a way to having things working while installed as per the proper instructions.

  • Take the logo off and it could be a frame from any of the major manufacturers. Is anyone making interesting/unique carbon frames anymore??

Nah it will be fine. Frame and crank is stiff as you like.

It should just work though something is up somewhere. Could be something else though - backwards fitted directional chain for example.

Nope, that's it. Even mtbs are pretty much all the same shape now

  • Yeah chain is installed facing correct way. I'll ride it as is until I can get frame alignment checked.

Will have a look at the rear hub axle and check its spaced and assembled correctly.

  • i'd put money on it being your mech hanger that's bent

  • correctly set!

  • So from here on in its just unsubstantiated 'x% faster' stats off the same frames? Thats dire
