The two of us want to race one for the Dorset Gravel Dash this year...
-
• #10784
£500 seems ok for that and it’s reasonably local.
Needs sizing infos

• #10785
Looks perfect for that. I'd probably chip in...

Easy pick up from Luton or ride it back to town...

What's that thing on the rear hub?
-
• #10788
Emergency third brake. Bit of overkill if you have V brakes but if you carrying a load of shit and both of you weigh 90kg and you are descending an alpine col then it might save you from blowing out a tube due to the rims heating up.

True, that happened to my friend after descending into Matlock, the tyre went too, luckily we'd stopped as we were probably doing about 60kph on the descent.

Presumably MTB wheels should be slightly less prone to blowing out, as they are higher volume/lower pressure than road tires. I'd still be tempted to swap the front forks for some disc forks for ease of use

interesting. how does it work? back pedal style or?
-
• #10793
Ah, so worse as less rim-track to dissipate heat on.
Cable discs should be fine? Or are they not significantly better than V brakes - I don't think I've ever had a V brake bike
-

Cable discs should be fine?
Maybe. Depends if the hardware can melt or if the pads are particularly susceptible to heat.
A well set up V brake is a good brake. The pads are massive and there's loads of mechanical advantage in the design, they are simple and they weigh nothing. They didn't stick around on MTBs long because unlike discs they work better when things are clean and dry and when the rim is true.

Recon we need disc brakes for Dorset. 1900m descent (and ascent) over 150km.

Drag brakes are fantastic. Means you can use the regular brakes like normal rather than grabbing them until your knuckles turn white.
Might get a bit skiddy off-road though.

• #10797
yeah you're probably right
the search continues... -

Personally I'd be more concerned about the gravel chipping those sick candy fadez

Nah man, vees will be fine!
I've been hanging onto this Synapse SL for a while. Had an offer through ebay about 6 months ago for £250 and probably should have accepted. Does anybody want to take it for £225 posted? (less if you cover fees) I can prob get it posted for £15 - I just want to get clear £200. It's a size 52 (55 top). Grubby in places but looks good built up. 1 bottle mount is broke but that's it really. BB30, but threaded adaptor installed. The second pic is how i built it
