No-one else has ever found this funny, but I used to have a female student who was called Yang Yin--that is, with the first name stated second as is customary in most areas of China. 'Yang' is obviously 'male, masculine' and 'yin' is 'female, feminine'. When she came to study in London, people either called her 'Yin Yang', which at least put her names in the order customary in the west, although to her it would still have sounded as if her gender had been reversed, or 'Yang Yin', which was the correct order in China but over here made her name sound as if it had changed gender the other way around. As I mentioned, I seem to be the only one who finds this funny.

You'd have appreciated Neville Hope, the Geordie character from Auf Wiedersehen, Pet who used to refer to everyone as 'man', including his wife Brenda who he referred to as 'man woman'.

It's one of my favourite TV series, but I hadn't made that connection.

Oh, and the current Lord Chief Justice is called 'Lord Judge'. Not silly or stupid, just appropriate.

Imagine if he told his dad "No, I don't want to be a lawyer like you, I want to be an artist!". What I waste of surname that would be.

I don't seem to come up with silly or stupid names, just apt ones. Here's Dave Tigwell, an engineer who will do one-off cycle build work (seen in VeloVision):
