  • SKS Chromoplastic, black, wide fit

Whichever you choose be prepared to have to do something like this.

  • If you have a disc up front you're gonna have to do that with any traditional mount mud guard

  • Easily done with a vice and some thought

  • Yeah you'll have to do that with any mudguard.

It's tricky with BB7s because they are darn wide and have an adjustment dial on the outside of the caliper right where the stay needs to be.

  • Titanium Scoble...

  • SKS Chromoplastic, black, wide fit

This or the Gilles berthoud steel mudguard that's slightly cheaper at SJS.

  • They rattle.

  • They don't, this isnt an Alu mudguard which are more prone to rattling.

  • If you want a CK hollotech BB there's one for sale here.

  • low key quality fixed wheel set here James if you want, do you a deal

  • What tubeless compatible tyres have you found in 28c size James?

I've actually specced a bike very similar to this which I should be getting soon - but based on a Kinesis Tripster frame.

Going to run Sram Apex compact, BB7s, Hope Hoops/ Stans, Ti Regal saddle, Lightly flared Nitto bars and bright orange Lizard Skin tape.

Tyres will have to be Hutchinsons and 25c is all I can find.

  • ^ when I was looking into tubeless tyre options for the Alpha 340 I found a site that had said they'd used normal tyres over the hutchinson ones.

I'll see if I can find a link.

  • He's not using Alpha rims.

  • No, but surely the same principle applies as they're still stan's and have the same insides, no?

If you can make any normal road tyre tubeless (assuming the correct rim/kit), then surely you'll be able to do the same with a slightly larger touring one?

  • Stop making up theories Hugo.

Stans have a really good website and forum. They answer consumers questions directly so that's the best place for info on what tyres will run on Crests, and any other stuff.

  • Still I'd be curious to know tho.

Can I convert any road tire to tubeless?
No, currently you may only use Hutchinson Tubeless Tires. We expect to see tires available from other manufactures in the future.

    Doesn't say why not though.

  • I use a 42T on the front and a 12-27T on the back for my commutocross bike. It's plenty for my commute which involves a few climbs.

  • Lizardskins tape, chromoplastic guards. I just fitted ful guards on a disc fork using a fat P-clip. Simples.

    Tyres.
    Marathon racer evolution 35mm.
They'd ride like butter on those 29er rims.

  • the big tyres would up the GI considerably...

it will of course be lizardskins

the chromoplastic guards are probably the ones, p45 or p50 size?

  • This sounds great James. Good luck with the build!

  • Re the tyres

I am not planning on running the wheels tubeless on the road (and maybe will also use tubes for offroad duties).

There are not many cx specific disc rims at the moment, the stans have great weight to strength ratio, are wide so I can run a wider road slick such as a marathon 28 or possbily even larger

I use tubeless system on my stans flows on my MTB and they are amazing, but as this wheelset may be used on and off road I think setting it up as tubeless is too much of a faff, and will waste a lot of stans fluid if i swap they tyres over.

There are stans road rims, they are made with a braking surface and to be run tubeless at high pressure, so not really what i need

  • the big tyres would up the GI considerably...

It may but not that noticeable.

P45 might be a tight fit, currently riding with a 33.3c tyres on a P45 and it just about fit (look tidy thought).

If you reckon you have enough clearance for a P50, go for it.

    Regarding fit - here's a solution;

  • what is the mounting arm?

    from http://www.bicycles.net.au/forums/viewtopic.php?f=41&t=48629

    Lynskey Cooper CX (Cyclocross)
    SKS Chromoplastic (P45) Mudguards
    Tubus Airy Ti Pannier Rack
    Ortlieb Backroller Plus Panniers
Tyres: Schwalbe Marathon Plus 700x28c (P45 guards leave enough room to run up to around 37mm for tyres)

    Up to, if you put a 37c tyres in it, you'll spend a long time finely adjusting the mudguard to not rubs against the tyres, just look at how tight the clearance is with 33.3c;

If you're gonna run 35c, I urged you to go for a P50 if it can be fitted.

I'd go with 35mm slicks + P50 if it fits. Might as well fill those clearances, and it'll contrast more to your road bike. Then remove the guards and fit the fattest off-road tyres possible.

I'm an opertunist cyclist. Which why I never had road specific tyres on my CX-commuter. But something I could hit a mild trail on at slightest opertunity.

So for me, a kenda small block 8, was a perfect tyre. With your wheels I would be tempted to go CX tubeless. It gets rubbish reviews in the CX racing world. But thats not what you'd be using them for.

The Raven looks like a great alround tyre, and you already have the tubeless gear anyway. I'd try that.
