If you were to weight sports based on global interest in them, and then rank where we feature in the 'best of the world' list, then total up our weighted rankings in all sports, I reckon we would be very very high. If it was then done on a per capita basis it would not surprise me if we were the best sporting country in the world.

The above is based on gut feel and knowledge - I'd love to see some evidence.
