  • that coupling looks dicey as hell...

  • this is nice, there is a road frame in vintagebikecave on sale now which has exactly this, always considered it as a nice little touch

    is there?

  • you should know?
    http://vintagebikecave.com/shop/1970s-roadtouring-frame/

    £114.40?

    pls>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

  • I dont set the fucking prices

  • its true though, some of them deserve a forehead slap

  • The forces will be running down the length of the nails, and the only forces in question are the forces generated by Edscoble's left hand while braking. Unless Mr. Scoble has superpowers, and can pull nails apart with his bare hands, I'd say they're well within spec.

There's a slight sideways force because the cable comes around the seatpost.
Also, brakes are levered. I've bent a few cheap regular hangers (see my bad photo – The cable was around the other side until yesterday.) Possibly down to something else, but worth raising nonetheless.

    Back to the thread though.

  • There's a slight sideways force because the cable comes around the seatpost.

I find those largely depend on how you installed the cabling rather, so it'll take some TLC to enable the right length to get a good precise modulation.

Another reason why i went for non-aero is that it's very easy to installed the cable and still get great modulation.

  • Not such good braking from the hoods tho' I like the look and simplicity of non-aero levers but I like to be able to brake from the hoods.

  • I'm quite comfortable riding on the drop nearly all the time nowadays, also I went with a very specific Shimano brake levers that braking on the hood I found personally is pretty comfortable, no brake levers is ever going to be as easy to pull on the top as on the drop.

Still, I'm now worrying about how it'll feel in the end, luckily got some Campag record singlespeed levers...

  • top notch. really like the progress. must confess, i do really like the steel with those tyres.

  • Here it is with the rear wheel in place;

I was very tempted to go for an all chrome frame which will look amazing, but ultimately I want a very inconspicuous bicycle to go against my conspicuous nature.

  • looks fantastic

  • Hey Ed,

I've followed this thread from the start and it just occurred to me: what's the frame material?

I scanned all 9 pages just now but couldn't see.

  • High tensile steel.

  • I tell a lie.

    Reynolds 853.

  • Riveting!

    ^ steel joke

    (barely a joke)

I see the price is dropped :)

  • Excellent Forehead Slappage fellow T-Rexee!

  • Think it would be quite appropriate to says that he... nailed it.

    That's ace (again!)

I have a bit of a problem as my between my frame being specced/designed and delivered, I changed my initial brake setup from caliper to center-pulls, so don't have a 'native' frame part for the rear hanger, so will need to use something like the Surly hanger, which isn't quite as nice!

  • The Surly hanger is a nice looking bit of kit, but they're quite flexy, I would recommended something like this from SJS Cycles, even if it's not as nice as the Surly one;

  • I see, though my rear brake runs internal (and out the side) so to have the stop that high up will need a bit more looping. Plus the SJS one doesn't look as, erm, nice.

Tbh I might even look into fashioning one myself now if I find a similar butcher-able strong material.

  • The Surly hanger is a nice looking bit of kit, but they're quite flexy, ...

Is that based on experience of actually using one, or just looking at one close up? To me they look minimal but well designed to resist the main force they'll meet in use. What problematic flexing do they exhibit?

Is it a matter of the cable outer pushing it sideways if you don't get the length just so?

  • Mine seems to work fine. It's also nice that it just moves itself to the correct angle and is one of the few I could find with a barrel adjuster.

  • no flex at all on the surly one - works perfectly.
