Guys got an idea for a slightly different look...
Basically cinelli natural colour cork tape with cinelli jelly belly clear tape as second layer
madness or genius?
I tried something similar, harlequin with two rolls of splash cork. Could not get round the hoods, looked gash, probaby just me and you will rock the look.
Give it a try, if it goes tits up you can always just plain wrap and try again another day.

Thanks to gridds I now know he's using the cinelli natural cork gel tape on his build, hard to find pics of the natural cork stuff on a real bike so really helped seeing those pics cheers buddy.
Ordering natural standard and gel tapes plus the jelly from crc all on sale at the mo so have the choice if the gel is too thick, using aux brakes right now so no hoods to worry about, should be sweet.
No idea how it would feel but if the cork is wrapped tight enough maybe ok, anyway will have a go and post pics after attempt.
Gonna be fun cos I'm going reverse wind to avoid needing finishing tape, done many times but this will be tricky.

Opinions on best way to finsh a std gel tape job? Just fitted brown Bonty gel tape to my Cinelli Valencia bars, love the colour and stuff but my usual technique of tapering the end of the tape and wrapping in insulating tape doesn't look very good.

What about white electrical tape or another colour? What colour is the bike?

Yeah, depends on the build. I think brown tape finished with black can look good on a modern build.

Self Amalgamating Tape .. not cheap but gives a nice finish on a modern

Never really thought about it till now but maybe you could use heat shrink? Have to be careful not to damage the tape tho.

Quite fancy having a crack at harlequin, but is cotton tape good in the wet? The bike is outside much of the day, I'm imagining it just gets super soggy when rained on

you can coat it in shellac...

I really don't like the look of Shellac.

well if you wrap it tight, it will get wet, but not 'soggy' so to speak...

Lad i know swears by double sided strong bond adhesive tape on the last wrap. Layer the double sided onto the underside of the gel tape and carefully wrap to your end point.
He constantly gets stick because it must surely wear over time but hes a dickhead and swears it doesnt.

I usually do it with Superglue for the last wrap. Never had a problem.

Thx Apollo, my Father had some Shellac left, so I'll put that on once it's ready.
Oh and sometimes, whem a custommer doesn't want any tape on his bartape we glue it. Works fine.

It will be very thick. A better idea is to use cloth tape in the colour you want.
An old inner tube.
I've done this. It works well. If the bars are thin/large tube you *may *be able to slide them over like track grips - but it can be a faff. Otherwise reverse wrap tape and then split the inner tube and carefully wrap around.
Or gel pads.
They work well.
