There are a number on that list that actively encourage their workers to cycle
It may be worth contacting them suggesting THEY boycott AL rather than Boycotting them if they use AL -
• #103
Heard this morning from Carlton Reid that he believes Boris knows nothing about this whole boycott thing. He's probably just hoping to keep his head down and hope it passes by...

Signed, would it be worth trying to get in contact with high up Libdems like Cleggy? I think it will be difficult to get any leverage from the Tories considering they receive large donations from AL, the Libdems are very much on the side lines to the Tories, if they got involved it could work in their favour boosting their view from the public. Just an idea.

Bill, I know well that this is all stuff you know about, but I did hear that AL jobs are often taken by the 'first responder' who is on the patch. Perhaps that is out-of-date, or just crap, I can't say I heard it direct from a driver. Is it possible there is still a scramble even with the GPS system if several cars are within radius?
I'm not totally familiar with the system that AL use, but they have tried to design out human controllers from the PHC side (no one has yet figured out a good way to take humans out of controlling couriers, unfortunately for my riders, fortunately for me - and, no, E Courier doesn't count - otherwise they would be ruling the market, instead of having been bought out).
When they were still using human controllers, they were on open call, which is a complicated system, and open to abuse by controllers & mobiles. I know that they have some channels which are still human, and obviously they have to use humans when the software is down. The "first responder" story sounds like a human open call thing.
In the end, the company has an overriding interest in getting the work covered quickly, and that means allocating it to the nearest available mobile as quickly as possible, which means using GPS location of mobiles, and auto allocation software, which is why AL invested heavily in developing their own system. I think, although I'm not sure, that some of the black cab circuits use similar software, for similar reasons.
As I said before, it is possible to cheat any system, and GPS location is by no means completely reliable, especially in town, and there are also things to consider like the fact that closest as the crow flies isn't necessarily closest in time, particularly in the London postal area, and in certain corridors outside of London postal at certain times - eg, it can take 2 hours to get from the West End to the Dome at the wrong time of day, whereas it can take less than 25 minutes at 3am.
Also the software won't be 100% reliable, although AL have spent a lot of money to try & make it as bomb-proof as possible.

On a side note I managed to secure 3rd party liability and personal accident injury cover whilst a courier.
Did you, indeed? Do you still have the details to hand? I want to include something in the letter I am about to write to Mr Griffin.
Was it the standard CICA policy or something else?

This whole thing is far bigger than just cycling.
Johnson's spokesman was very careful when he said that Addy Lee had not donated to his "re-election" campaign. It appears that they did make a £25,000 donation to his 2008 original election campaign. Quite simply a deceptive use of words.
Addy Lee have set their sights higher in the past four years. Their donations to central Tory funds appear to have reached £250,000. For this they have been given access to the Transport Minister and the Prime Minister. Well, you would expect that for that price. Curiously they were not named among those who had purchased access to Cameron.

So another "donate to the Tories and dine with the prime minister"gate
Didn't the previous tory administration fall due to sleaze?

History teaches us that we don't learn from historyLabour were whiter than white though 'coughpetermandelsoncough'
It is also well known to be a fallacy of an idea (although popular) that history repeats itself, though it can seem to be the case when making broad sweeping assumptions about historical events

240 1* ratings vs 24 5*
(Seems low number of rating overall despite this campaign) -

As Lord Acton said "power corrupts..."
Sadly just about every government gets into power and sees themselves as above the law. In a democracy, it is down to the people to restrict the amount of corruption by refusing to tolerate it.
History does not repeat itself. Human weakness, however, is timeless.

One of Griffin's beefs against cyclists is that many ride with earphones.
Personally I do not nor would I advocate that anyone should.
That said, I find this argument from motorists nonsensical and deeply hypoocritical.
How many motorists drive with windows shut and radios or CD players blasting out sufficiently loudly to ensure that they cannot hear a bicycle bell or a scream of warning?
Indeed a few years ago I watched in horror as a lorry slowly crushed a cyclist with motorists and pedestrians screaming at him to stop while he, sitting behind glass and probably listening to music, drove slowly on.
Drivers who cannot hear can kill. Most cyclists can hear a car's horn above their music.

How much for Thatcher?

Balanced view on ipod wearing cyclists cliveo. Much less dangerous than radio listening drivers

I had an argument with a women on twitter* regarding this. Her defense was that motorists have mirrors, so it's okay.
Tweet is here is anyone would like to respond:

They do? Could've fooled me.

• #121
Do those mirrors work under vehicles? Are they passive or do they require drivers to actually look into them?
