Reading Barry's notes is what made me buy a bike.
Six years and 31,000 miles ago.....

A few of us are looking at doing this as a DIY
400km Audax if anyone else is interested - its basically there and back and whatever added on to make up the distance!Time will be factored in for consuming heroic amounts of beans on toast.

Cool.
Don't forget, the distance to the coast gets shorter each year...

This appeals to me immensely.
At £20 I'm not sure I can stretch to a coach ticket, is it wise to try the there and back again without a backup plan?
-
• #212
isn't the back up plan on any ride to give it a go, but if all goes tits up walk to a train station and get home that way?

I just checked at National Rail Enquiries - the on the day fare's gone up.
The single fare from Darsham to London Liverpool Street is now £37.90 on the day, from £9 in advance.
So I suppose that is a back-up but then there's still no guarantee you will get you AND your bike on the train - the Darsham train is only allowed to take 4 bikes.
£20 for beach to London with guaranteed room for your bike still seems like a fairly cheap option to me, but perhaps I am biased.

Bear in mind that I know the numbers behind those prices (at least, for when we did it) and you should be making a very healthy profit from it all with the rates that you have. Is it cheap? Well, it's competitive (given no other competition) for the early bird, and it's expensive for the closer to the date tickets.
For an insurance policy only where use is not actually anticipated or hoped for... then it's expensive when you don't have much money.

Are we not doing a coach?
-
• #217
Why are the feeder rides in the morning?! If this is a 9 pm start, leaving at 10am seems terribly early.
-
• #218
No, I opted not to because Southwark moved to staggered coaches starting from 9am which negated a lot of the reason for our coach (to not have to wait around so long to make a move). It also freed up myself and others to enjoy the ride, rather than do logistics.
Downsides: It's more expensive, we allowed you to pack your bike and that's unlikely to happen with the Southwark coaches, you'll sleep next to a stranger unless you pair up.
The bike packing is probably the biggest concern that remains. Perhaps if you ask nicely they'll let you on the truck to carefully pack your bike. But if it's busy it's unlikely.
