  • I have an old XP installation which is on it's last legs. Would cloning the current installation to an SSD be a good temporary solution before upgrading?

    Like this: http://www.techradar.com/news/computing-components/storage/move-to-ssd-migrate-your-pc-to-solid-state-1148051

Is it really that simple? I just have too much software that would need licencing checks to be arsed to do it at the moment, and I'm going to get an SSD anyway.

I don't really understand the shrinking process. Is it temporary, or can you boot and use the shrunk install from the SSD? I've reduced my current install down to 160GB minimum. Better to spend double on a 256GB rather than shrink and benefit from the extra space on the upgrade?

Sorry to think aloud. Oh and my current MOBO does have SATA and eSATA

    Yes

  • omg fuck you focus stealing programs. I just typed half my password into communicator without realizing. And fuck OSX too, does the same damn thing. I'd stick to Linux except work refuses to allow it on the VPN (basically IT have no clue).

  • What do you guys think of the new steam box images? Looks fantastic.

  • omg fuck you focus stealing programs.

The number of times I've yelled this at my screen... fark

  • 6TB, helium filled hard drives!

Nice idea. No price though = expensive as fuck.

How would they know you're on the VPN?

I used to connect using whatever, copy all of the config out, and then connect using Linux.

Communicator has a default plugin that detects and masks passwords, preventing you from inadvertantly revealing your passwords to others.

Vbulletin has a similar plugin - I'll type my password to the forum below:

    See? Try it.

  • omg.

  • :)

  • I should point out that it will alywas look to you as if you had written your password, but when others view, or quote, it wlil be masked.

  • It works!

12 characters is better than the minimum, but dictionary words make it attackable, especially if anyone observes you logging in.

    Or you post it online.

  • Password1

    Safe and secure.

  • My password is uncrackable.

Ha. That's not my password. I won't bother explaining.

  • 6TB, helium filled hard drives!

BlueQuinn used to have a job in a helium factory, but he got the sack because they didn't like his tone of voice.

  • I may have remembered this forum fact incorrectly.

    I'm feeling less flippant.

TW2 was obviously playing a joke on anyone stupid enough to try posting their password.

This joke, while it may not have originated on an IRC channel, was definitely immortalised by a website called bash.org. This site was where anyone who saw something said in their channel that they felt the whole world needed to appreciate, could submit it for acceptance. Said joke made it in to the top 100 "quotes" on bash.org and there it has remained for a long, long time.

Hence me posting, "classic bash". As in, "a classic post from bash.org".

Alternatively you probably know all this and were making another joke that has gone totally over my head...

  • We need a thread equivalent to bash.org on here.

Yeah the problem is the certs. It's Cisco, so when you connect first time you have to "enroll" the pc. It runs some local software to figure out OS etc... and sends it back. Work will not accept anything other than Windows/OSX. I've gotten around the rest of it, just that one cert I need.

Probably a way to get it out of the Windows install, but I've yet to figure that out.

  • USB 3.0, are the cables any different or are USB 2 cables sufficient?
