  • Only a little NUC jobba. Obviously no issues with that.

  • Essentially yes it is as simple as buying more and putting them in.

I would assume each would hold 4gb minimum so you could go from 4gb to 16 in a flash.

However its also worthwhile downloading something like Speccy to see what the max gb each slot will hold.
If they hold 8gb or higher then obvs 32gb is far, far better.

As someone said, ensure the Ram are matched in terms of spec and speed. Don't mix them.

Smaller size Ram is also very cheap

  • Shit, the last time I carried a PC to someone's house to play deathmatch was Quake-era.

  • probably simpler to buy a pair of 8GB than 3x 4GB if you want 16gb

  • @DethBeard I may also have some DDR3 floating around if I can find it. Give me a chance to have a look.

  • agree, that was just an example based on the max RAM for each slot being 4GB

  • The first time I managed to get the COM port baud settings right for DOOM deathmatch to work with my m8’s 486 I nearly oozed a thin, clear prepubescent bead out.

  • I remeber being amazed that I could chat shit to my mate who was a few blocks away in country Australia with both of us playing Descent (probs a free version off a magazine?) over the phone lines. He went on to code a commercial Quake reskin (https://gamicus.fandom.com/wiki/Malice_(mod)) and last I heard was working for Nintendo.

I also remember spending all night trying to get one of our guy's machines connected via coax cable and eventually mind blown we solved it and could play Doom in lan party before the phrase existed. I don't know what was going on but I remember lots of junk food and somethign about UART.

  • Descent (probs a free version off a magazine?)

I played a free version of Descent for months and months. I remember clear as day that it came on a floppy disk on a magazine and was limited to only two levels. Didn't hold me back though!

  • That sounds about right although I assumed it was on CD ROM but when did CDROMs come out? I didn't actually like the game itself but it was the first time I'd ever communicated using computer over a phone line. It was amazing being able to chat shit with someone that wasn't at the other end of a voice call and interact within the game.

  • I had these but I have no doubt it was on CD too at some point. Great game.

    Loved Descent 2 also

  • Wow, Malice for Quake!

I had it on a pirate CD full of Quake & Quake II mods that my Ukrainian grandparents bought at a Kyiv market.

The Ukrainian piracy market was huge, dedicated shops selling professionally pressed, retail packaged warez with printed covers and manuals. Often the games would be modded to translate into Russian, with comedy soviet-era voiceovers for all characters done by a single monotone dude, as was the norm for pirate TV stations out of Poland in the Soviet days that would show Western movies across the border with similarly ridiculous voiceovers.

  • I've got some brand new 4x4gb crucial ddr3l ram for sale. They are £25 each online. Looking for £40 for all 4. DM if interested.

  • voiceovers for all characters done by a single monotone dude, as was the norm for pirate TV stations out of Poland in the Soviet days

Still the norm on much Russian TV

  • Yeah, he went on to work with Ratloop and then we kinda lost contact for years when we went to different unis. Last time I bumped into him he'd just finished some racing game on Nintendo. He was always very talented with music and software so ending up writing audio engines and making music for games seems kinda natural.

We had computer swap meets in Oz and there'd always be dudes selling CDs full of pirate shit. :) We were at one that got busted. That was funny.

  • My 2 week old RTX 3080 went back to the shop in disgrace today.

    Now waiting on a replacement.

See you in 6 months again.

  • PC audio.

What's the best hardware / software / both solution for routing audio on Windows. I used Loopback on Mac but they don't have Win version.

I have a game. I want to record both in-game audio and my mic audio from a wireless headset. I want them both recorded (ideally different channels) onto an external recorder over HDMI.

I also need to be able to hear the game audio through headset.

Using Voicemeeter I can send my mic on the headset to the recorder but game audio doesn't go through. I was sort of able to get application audio to the recorder but only by changing my system audio to Voicemeeter. But Voicemeeter did something to the sound of the game so instead of the lovely, layered surround sound on the Logitech G Pro X Wireless I only hear noises in binary - they're either to my left or to my right - so 180 degrees of possibility rather than hearing a sound and suddenly being able to point towards it within 5-10 degrees. I had to look directly at the source of a noise to work out where it was coming from (i.e. pan left and right until I hear it transition from left hemisphere to right hemisphere and then I know where it's coming from).

    I'm open to:

    • Getting a different mic and see if separating the input/output helps. Also not really happy with the quality of voice recordings I'm getting from the Logitech G Pro X even with lots of tinkering in the BlueVoice settings. I have lots of broadcast mics already though.

    • Getting some sort of hardware mixer and/or USB interface to use with my broadcast mics - e.g. a focusrite scarlett 2i2 / a Rodecaster Pro - both would be potentially useful for work or maybe the GoXLR Mini / similar?

Something else? I'd prefer hardware over software mainly because I don't want to have to change Windows settings every time I play a game.

    Thoughts?

  • I don't know but I have a Soundblaster card and a Behringer USB output thingiebobs for sellz that I 0% guarantee will do what you need :)

  • Only if it comes with used bib shorts.

In other news - I can't duplicate my display to a small monitor/recorder I have. I could do it yesterday but not today. Fuck knows what's going on. I can extend, but not duplicate. I've tried different cables / switching off and on blah blah.

Might just get a console instead.

Edit: solved - had obviously fucked around in nvidia control panel when I was tinkering with DSR yesterday.

  • I have got just the pair for you...

  • If the Logitech headset is a multichannel device then that might be difficult for recording in hardware. Why don't you record using OBS?

  • I could and may well. But I'm partly drawn to trying because I have some kit and don't just want it sitting around when I'm not working. Good to stay in practice etc.

Experimented further with Voicemeeteer today and am sure I don't want to go down software route. Too much restarting required and still can't get what I want exactly. Probably end user idiocy but I don't have the time to figure it out.

I've seen a fairly promising video of the GoXLR Mini in use which seems like it'll be spot on - a very idiot proof approach to routing which means I may even be able to use it for jobs from time to time.

  • Just started building 3x Unreal Engine servers each with a 16-core EPYC CPU and 2x Nvidia RTX A5000 GPUs.

Given the bonkers parts shortages, it was surprisingly easy to get hold of the GPUs but the EPYC processors are a nightmare. Had to tell so many porkies to get them.

  • Nvidia RTX A5000

yeah the miners don't seem to be going for the Quadro-type cards for some reason

  • Is the ETH hashrate limited on the pro-grade parts?

Seems mad that second-hand 3080s are going for similar prices to a brand-new RTX A5000.
