  • isnt your nighthawk a router/ modem??? why you using a modem into it?

    this one?

you can get rid of the modem as it has a built in one

  • turn it into a slave / access point with 5ghz

  • Ah no, I've got the R7000, you've got the D7000
    http://www.netgear.co.uk/home/products/networking/wifi-routers/R7000.aspx
Very similar - yours has modem and router combined, mine is just router.

Decided to go that way as I have the phone line coming into the cupboard under the stairs, and some cat6 into a few other rooms so I could put the router where the wifi works best, and keep the ugly cheap plastic modem out of the way

  • Having a mare.
Got a new gpu with 2x 8 pin connectors, and have 2 8pin ports on my modular psu to connect them to but can't find a suitable cable.
    Found this:
    https://www.overclockers.co.uk/silverstone-6-2-pcie-cable-2x-55cm-black-cb-031-sv.html

Which seems to be the job but it's 55cm long. Does anyone know where I find such a thing?

  • I've used the app but I have no idea what I'm doing... I set the SSID and encryption to the same as the BT box then made sure radios on AP and BT box were different channels. It seems to work, is that it?

  • Unless your house is particularly large I'd just use the AP for WiFi and turn it off on the BT router.

  • Thanks both, done that and everything seems fine. Still getting a shitty connection in my studio/study but I'm hoping moving the AP a bit will help. It's ~10dB better on 2.5GHz but not getting 5GHz yet.

  • nevermind

  • This is not enough information to say.

    Screenshots would be nice.

Initial hunch: your hidden signals are your own signals, your own equipment broadcasting on different wavelengths for guest access.

But hey, who knows... no-one based on the description you've given.

  • Sorry, me being an idiot...

trying to figure out my bad signal. It was the chromecasts that was following my network. (they were creating guest networks)

  • I want to repurpose one of my PCs as a media PC but it doesn't have a HDMI output on the motherboard. It's currently silent and I want to keep it near enough that way.

Any suggestions on very quiet/fanless video cards with HDMI out. Only being used for Kodi, Plex, etc at 1080p so nothing too demanding.

  • I can't remember what I went for, but there are a load of graphics cards that will keep the fans off until they are needed. Result: Total silence until they have significant load... and with hardware decoding of a lot of video, this means the fans never get turned on.

  • Ah, this is what I went for:
    http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=5575#ov

Note the 0db under low load bit.

If those fans are ever spinning, I do not notice.

I use mine to drive a 4k screen.

  • Cheers, I'm looking considerably cheaper than though. Preferably sub twenty quid if possible

  • Evening All, my HTPC has been playing up recently, either failing to boot up and sometimes turning off by itself. I'm confident the boot issue is due to a failing hard drive and I think the sudden powering off is due to the CPU overheating. I notice in the BIOS the CPU heats up to 100C within a minute or two of switching the machine on from cold, does anyone know what could be causing this please?

The machine is clean throughout, no dust etc on the CPU heat sink, likewise the CPU fan is clean. From what I've read online the problem could be dried out heatsink thermal paste, but would this really cause the CPU to heat up so rapidly? The CPU isn't being overclocked and the machine doesn't get used for any gaming etc. I've order d some thermal paste, so hopefully that'll do the trick, but any thoughts would be appreciated, cheers.

Update: new heatsink thermal paste did the trick, cpu temp stable at 50C now, who knew it would make such a huge difference!

  • Cheers, got myself a card and then realised that, theoretically, my motherboard does sound over DVI so I could have used a DVI to HDMI cable.

Realistically that could lead to a load of EDID issues (it goes into an amp first) and would probably have eaten up some of the processor performance which I don't want (the machine is also my plex server) so not too fussed about it.

  • Been offered an Asus RT-AC66U for £50. Is this a worthwhile move to improve my current wifi situation (Virgin Super Hub 2)? I've looked at the Ubiquiti stuff and would really like that, but is it worth the extra £30 to get a UAP-AC-LITE?

  • I have a big desktop tower what do I need to consider the put in smaller case? It's huge ATM.

  • I want to get an external (USB 3) SSD for my Surface Pro 3. Speed is probably more important than massive amounts of data.

I'm thinking of getting a chassis, a new SSD for my PC, and then dropping my current 128g one into the chassis.

Any tips on what's good? (Chassis + larger SSD).

Also - thinking of trying to cool down my PC a bit. Have space for another 3 or 4 fans. Any one have preference when it comes to these things?

  • What size is your motherboard?

  • I'd guess it's an ATX so you'd need to buy a mini or micro ATX motherboard that matches the CPU socket to buy a smaller case.

Then remove the CPU, GPU, drives, etc, etc from the old computer and use them to build the new one.

Or just buy or build a new small form computer with up to date components (which for a 6 year old PC is what I'd do).
