It's worth adding that if you use the ubiquiti access point you will need the control software running on a networked computer for it to function. am super pleased with my setup but when I reboot my mac mini my wifi network goes down until it finished booting again. which is a great way to wind up the girlfriend btw.

Er, whut?
Did you install a Ubiquiti Controller? If so... yes... it is the master and a security principle is that if the master is gone, the slaves don't act independently.
But you can run a UniFi AP without the Controller software and just configure it using an iOS or Android app. Which is how I do it, and does not require keeping any computer turned on to run the Controller software.

whats the max number of characters in a windows filename? is it 255?
-
• #3505
Depends on filesystem:

ace, thanks!
-
• #3507
Those are all 255, apart from Fat12
And if you've got a 16MB file size limit then dropping from 255 to 254 character filenames is the least of your worries :DThere's also the MAX_PATH limit that complicates things sometimes

Genuinely surprised that the link I gave doesn't mention which file systems support symlinks.
NTFS does, and it is such a good feature of a file system to use.

I stand corrected then. will hunt for more details on how to run it but everything I found seemed to suggest it had to be running on a computer for you to be able to access the AP.
was planning on buying a cloud key controller to avoid doing so, so this is good news.
edit: I think this was what I read... https://community.ubnt.com/t5/UniFi-Wireless/UniFi-AP-without-Controller-software/td-p/301678

I've had the Unifi AP running for a few months without the controller running other than when I wanted to do something. I did need it for updating the firmware though (I started to get some connection issues with a chromebook until I updated to the latest firmware).

Quick follow on question about the slaver router. Is it possible to change a router to include 5ghz by using some sort of adapter? IE, like a dongle on a pc? Google is rather barren over this question.
-
• #3512
I do not know the definative answer but I guess it is like saying can I get FM on an AM only radio by using an adaptor, The answer being very unlikely and if possible probably cheaper to buy a dual band one in the first instance.
The reason that there is nothing on google is probably because it is not possible. -
• #3513
But, I have a antenna dongle that plugs into my usb to give me 5ghz on my laptop. Why cant it do the same on the router?
-
• #3514
One is a receiver the other is a transmitter, huge difference.
The router has multiple functions such as
One or multiple NICs supporting Fast Ethernet or Gigabit Ethernet integrated into the main SoC
One or multiple WNICs supporting a part of the IEEE 802.11-standard family also integrated into the main SoC or as separate chips on the printed circuit board. It also can be a distinct card connected over a MiniPCI or MiniPCIe interface. So far the PHY-Chips for the WNICs are generally distinct chips on the PCB. Dependent on the mode the WNIC supports, i.e. 1T1R, 2T2R or 3T3R, one WNIC have up to 3 PHY-Chips connected to it. Each PHY-Chip is connected to a Hirose U.FL-connector on the PCB. A so-called pigtail cable connects the Hirose U.FL either to a RF connector, in which case the antenna can be changed or directly to the antenna, in which case it is integrated into the casing. Common are single-band (i.e. only for 2.4 GHz or only for 5 GHz) and dual-band (i.e. for 2.4 and 5 GHz) antennas.
Often an Ethernet switch supporting Gigabit Ethernet or Fast Ethernet, with support for IEEE 802.1Q, integrated into the main SoC (MediaTek SoCs) or as separate Chip on the PCB.

forum vpn of choice?

I keep finding myself using PIA rather than others... simply because their clients are good and it reconnects reliably and the speeds are good enough.

ty dk
Incidentally while searching a few mins ago someone mentioned Opera now includes one built into the browser. No use for torrent clients like vuze etc I guess, but for browsing/general use... Wonder how effective it is?

Weird audio bug. Sometimes when listening to things on my laptop it sounds like my speakers are blown out, but if I stop the source and start it again its fine. Think its only happened to Youtube but not definitive as that/browser is the only place I really play music from on my laptop.
Whats odd, is that I just had the same thing happen whilst listening through headphones too, so if it is a hardware issue, it isn't one with the speakers themselves.

I have this occasionally when running virtual machines and on start up which I tend to think indicates that there is no processing power left to manage the audio output correctly as the host and guest are maxing it out.

Oh interesting. I wound't have thought something like that would exhibit symptoms like this, I would have guessed it would have been more stuttering and jumping

After some more research I have decided on my home network solution...
EdgeRouterâ„¢X connected to Airport Extreme (with HDD attached) and Airport Express connected to the hifi.
Looked at the AmpliFi HD without any extensions but turns out it needs a stand alone modem still...
Solid solution or anyone know of any conflicts/problems?

Do you already own the Aiport stuff? Common consensus seems to be that Apple will be consigning it to history soon.
-
• #3525
Aye, thats what i have heard, but already own a couple... and they work pretty flawlessly... does my solution make sense?
Finally managed to get one of my old routers to comply. I now have 2 routers.
