  • This here is a disgustingly fast speed test between a clients PC and their RD server located in an East London data centre. Jaw hit the floor the first time I saw it.

  • Nice.

  • Expecting an engineer from virgin on Sat morning for the free upgrade from 20>60MB. Three-fold speed increase should be pretty nice. Slightly worried about the so-called 'super' hub, but if it's as bad as some people suggest I guess it can be used as moden only with our existing router.

  • Shame it isn't their download speed, still, it's a helluva lot faster for them to use RD than it is to use their 'actual PC.'

This is what we do with ours. As recommended by Virgin.

Superhub is a load of wank. Couldn't get wireless signal more than 2 foot away.

  • My mate had grief with his Superhub. Think he killed off the wifi and used it cabled and it was ok.

  • I've had no problems with mine at all

  • When did you get it?

  • end of last year

  • I noticed on the digital spy forums that there was the opportunity to beta test new firmware for the superhub. Don't fancy that meself, but it's reassuring to know they're at least attempting to support it.

  • My mate got his Superhub when they were first introduced and given the amount of trouble they seemed to exhibit I'm almost certain Virgin will have released a newer version or updated firmware at least. I hesitated getting one and then when his was shit I never bothered. I'm still using their stock router.

  • Actually I'm using a FON router and their stock router is a backup.

  • They gave me another netgear router when they gave me the superhub. I installed some custom firmware on it so i could be used as a WAP for my TV to stream media (Which is something i never do) so if the superhub starts causing problems I'll just use that instead.

    Attempting to support it?

When we received ours, they offered no help other than suggesting we buy another router and put the superhub in a 'special modem only' mode.

It's annoying, as our tv and internet with virgin is great, but hardware and customer support sucks balls.

  • Still waiting for the right screws to fit the Intel SSD... this is one of those times when actually going to a shop would be more efficient.

  • I fit mine with those double sided sticky pads. Seems to have done the job ok.

  • Sager NP9150 / Lenovo W530 / Alienware M14X?

  • Does anyone want a Lian-Li HD-01 hard drive mount? Designed for 2.5" and 3.5" drives to slot into Lian Li cases with rubber vibration damping.

  • Sager NP9150 / Lenovo W530 / Alienware M14X?

My personal choice would be lenovo, mostly because I trust their build quality, my last choice would be the alienware because they look foul and they're overpriced because of all the stupid lights

  • Spotter I was just about to say that. Alienware are good computers don't get me wrong but they are over priced.

Lenovo build quality is fantastic, Sager I'm not even sure about they do look good but I can't find too much about them.

CYOA does it have to be a laptop?

  • Unfortunately it does need to be a laptop.

I was dead set on the Lenovo for ages but the client who's actually paying for it was less convinced - suggesting asus/msi/dell etc so i researched some more and the sager sounded VERY good for the money - but I know nothing of their build quality (however the forums rate them very highly) and yep - agree on the appearance/pricing aspects of the Alienware - I despise the brand but I needed a choice of three to approach him with (even though from my personal preference it's between the sager and the lenovo).

From a gaming perspective it's the sager. WAY better cooling, better graphics card, better processor and about 200 quid cheaper delivered (even from the states).

From a work (heavy duty mobile video editing) perspective it's the lenovo.

Both will be fitted with 512gb SSDs and an extra mSata with the OS on (Win7Ultimate), with 32gb of either corsair vengeance or whatever Sager provide, the lenovo is fractionally lighter at 2.8kg to the Sager's 3.

For connectivity, the Sager has little things like more space between USB ports so oversized sticks can fit in - it also has a full sized keyboard whereas with the latest W5.. incarnation, Lenovo opted for a 6-row chiclet, much to the thinkpad fanboys anger.

The Thinkpad has a couple of nice features like a built in simcard slot, colour calibrator etc.

I did write a big list of pros and cons for each last night but I deleted it by mistake because I am - technically - an idiot.

  • I've not heard of Sager, but if they've got a good rep I suppose that would be OK, It depends if you can claim a gaming machine is better for you work or not.

I just can't believe you've managed to get a client to pay for this.

  • I think my biggest gripe is the side view of the Sager. I don't really like the fat at the back thin at the front look. The Lenovo is at least fat all the way along.

  • Lenovo Thinkpad W530
