  • I hope not!

  • Corsair 120GB Force 3 SSD are £84.99 on ebuyer atm.

I'm very tempted to by another for a striped RAID

  • That is tempting. My system drive is a 120GB Corsair Force 1 and it's pretty full. Paid £180 for that in Jan '11.

  • the 240gb drives are £185.99 so buying two works out cheaper anyway

    Snap.
    Must..sell..excess..bike-crap

My HDD now whirs loudly when trying to locate data.
Theres a little tick at the end of the whirring, really unnerving it is.
Im hoping it doesn't fail before the end Uni.

  • as least make sure you have everything backed up on an external.

  • Get Dropbox, put everything of worth in the Dropbox folder.

Then go for as long as you can on the existing hard drive... when it fails, yeah you'll have to reinstall, but at least you'll have not lost any data (that is in the Dropbox folder).

  • Uploaded most of it to uni servers a couple of a week or two back. Its safe, but not regularly backed up.
The important stuff is on my ipod.
Cant wait till it fails though, i love smashing up dead tech.

Question : If a HDD dies under due to natural causes, is data still retrievable?.

  • yes, but worst case scenario is a platter transplant.

Also my iPod video has developed the click of death, so I was planning on replacing its HD with a 32gb CF card via an adaptor, but Regal has just kindly given me a iPod Mini, which uses the same connect as CF cards. I like the idea of a 32gb mini. Its gold but I'm tempted to sand blast it....

  • iPod mini, like from '04/05?
Didnt think those were that easy to crack open.
Why not just scratch the gold off with a hour of your spare time and an old set of keys

  • This model:

My colleague has done it before, not that hard to open apparently. The man reason I want to sandblast it is so I can have a go on the sandblaster. I like the idea of the mini, its smaller, tougher, doesn't need an adaptor, and hopefully the small screen will mean longer battery life.

  • Think I might have one of those floating about, let us know how you get on.

  • I've already got one working with a 4gb card. Its easy, open plug the card in, restore with itunes. On 7 day shop 16gb cards are £15 and 32gb cards are £30

  • Apple thread >>>>>>>>>>>>>

  • Kingston are on sale 120gb SSD for only 69.99 today. Seems like a bargain to me.

Never had an SSD but I'm tempted to buy one at that price.

  • Give it a month or two if you can wait, theyre only bound to get cheaper

  • Follow that logic and you never buy any PC hardware, ever :)

  • Heh good point.
But why settle now, SSDs are fairly recent tech (recent tech means absolutely nothing as 1st gen shit is obsolete within a year) but wait a bit of time and save yer self a bit of bob.

  • SSDs are awesome. If you're not already running one I can only imagine the misery of wait times as programs load. And if you think this doesn't apply, you're wrong. Even Chrome can start and load a page in less than 250ms on SSD from the launching of the application, but just opening and loading the profile information on a hard drive would take longer than that.

The difference is night and day.

SSDs are as cheap as chips considering that they are the single biggest upgrade you can do to a machine after RAM. Just get one already.

  • Does anyone know how I can set up a microsoft exchange environment on the cheap?

I have 3 computers, (vista/windows7) possibly a 4th coming, and I would like them to share outlook calenders and share files. If possible, I'd also like to give someone remote access.

  • Just get one already.

Any spare change sir. Just a pound will do sir. Or if you dont have any change ill take that fiver i see in your wallet, if you dont mind.
No sir, its not going to drugs sir.*

But i hear you. It is the next thing on the list. But will wait until its a necessity before i take the plunge. The dying HDD somehow lives on. Until then i cant justify its purchase

    • - Actually a line i got today.

    I can't face a reinstall...

  • having seen too many in your day?

  • I can't face a reinstall...

    Just clone your OS drive?

  • Velo I know that an SSD would be a big upgrade but at the moment I'm not sure whether to go for more ram (currently 4GB) I only use my PC for games so I didn't go higher.
