  • it wont boot from the install cd,

It wont allow me to hit F10 or F12

  • Or rent a seedbox in a country that won't hand over your details. It does all the downloading, you grab stuff from it via SCP/HTTPS

  • Are there any seedboxes that give you root, so that you can tunnel?

A dedicated (virtual) server seems like overkill.

  • You don't need root in order to port forward, normal users can do it just fine

  • CB, earlier today.....

  • thanks to gus for this i know live in a pop up / ad - free world

*Not that i know fuck all about PCs or anything ....
    ** :-(

  • Is a good mechanical keyboard much like a filco tenkeyless majestouch ninja 2...

  • Not bad but i like the stylised volume control on thie DAS

  • That's the one I use at home and at work:

    http://www.keyboardco.com/keyboard/uk-filco-majestouch-2-nkr-tactile-action-keyboard.asp

I wanted the brown switches, it's a reasonable trade-off between noise and tactile response.

Though I went for the gamer keys and red escape too:

  • @Velocio
Glad you have uk iso and not some funky american keys. I keep thinking about getting one but worry it will turn me into a total keyboard snob who won't type on anything less ever again.

  • you should see what we type on at work...

    horrible horrible 80s thing...

  • If it's a old IBM model M keyboard it should go missing on ebay...

  • I've used those Lenovo keyboards since I started at my current job. They're not bad, but they're nothing for Keyboardiphiles to get excited about.

  • Sounds like a sensible place to put this...

Our consultant who works at various places was on holiday earlier this week and had a client in need of some work doing. Essentially they needed a HDD replacing on one of those huge Alienware machines, creating a RAID array and installing Windows 7 from scratch, followed by a load of Office stuff and then a fuckload of bits from the Adobe Creative cloud, so on, so forth. Also wasn't informed about issues with the fan being really loud, had to delve into the watercooling system to find a tonne of gunk around the heatsink.

Overall it took me ten hours over two days as a few snags happened along the way, as they do. What should I look at charging for this sort of job? I've no idea what's reasonable/fair to ask for but was thinking around the £250/300 mark.

    Thanks!

  • That would be cheap. If the snags were yours, then maybe fair enough. Otherwise add a bit more.

  • Main snag was the RAID drives not detecting upon installing Windows 7 with the drivers I was given. Had to dig deep to find another set that worked from there. Also forgot to add there was a member of staff who's emails weren't working so had to fanny around with that as well. £350-400 odd?

  • You make it sound like installing windows and some software is a huge job, when all it really take is a few clicks and you can sit back and watch the install bars.

Alienware watercooling systems are a load of crap, made by thermaltwat I think? at least some were. I'd advise replacing with HSF instead of bothering with it. but draining and cleaning one should only take a few hours tops.

basically it should be done within a day and for half of that day while installs and updates are running you can be working on other things.

  • Whilst that is true, the fact is you still have to be there, paying attention, and able to resolve things when they go wrong.

The money isn't pure time, it's paying for the accumulated experience to not fuck up their systems and to ensure you walk away and the systems are in a good state.

  • I'd almost double that price

  • Again, I only did the job because it's easy money, our consultant was on holiday and the guy who normally does that stuff for them was on holiday as well. As for 'working on other things' I'd already worked my normal job where I am from 7-2 then headed over there to do this, but remoted into where I work to cleanup a few bits I'd done earlier.

  • Is there someone or a company i could give my fucked up home pc and they could un-fuck it up?

Like here are the pieces, this is what i was trying to do. I dont know my arse from my computer elbow.

    Or am i being silly?

  • I'd be quite happy with £100 for that job, but I guess my skills and experience of being a lackey in a computer shop, now IT support Assistant are just undervalued. If I could make £400 doing that rather than £8.50P/h I'd have a party.

  • @ChainBreaker I said I could help out before but nothing ever went together.
