  • Those look great, would probably be more fitting seeing as Roberts fit Columbus forks to most of their builds these days...

  • I've got a set of Columbus Tusk forks for mine, they seem pretty well made, although not the lightest. They were about £60, I think.

    Frame looks great, btw.

  • cheers, the tusks look more my pricerange atm, but the frame has a 1" headtube and they don't seem to be commonly available in 1".

  • the miminals' are the only columbus ones that are

  • the miminals' are the only columbus ones that are

I was beginning to fear that was the case after a few minutes on google...

  • its hard to find a new nice 1" carbon these days, kee your eyes open on the bay for second hand ones, TIME ones come up now and again.

  • saw a pair of new minimals go on ebay for 50 quid the other day - keep your eyes peeled

  • The Colnago Street 1" forks that are fitted to my Dream are still available new but they're an eye-watering £300.

    They're bloody nice though.

  • How's it going, any progress?

  • Not much progress as of late, have been gradually saving up funds (being a poor music student doesn't help) and will then splurge on it soon. Hoping to get it built before July.

  • Have taken advantage of the Ribble sale to complete the groupset... should get the build moving.

  • The rest of the groupset is on its way, just need to order the forks, get the stem and bars, and most crucially decide on wheels.

I've been looking at the Planet X AL30's http://www.planet-x-bikes.co.uk/i/q/WPPXAL30/planet_x_al30_wheelset, which I have to say are currently my favourites as they come in silver and look vaguely vento/shamal esque... (if you squint), or Fulcrum Racing 7's http://www.ribblecycles.co.uk/sp/road-track-bike/Wheels-Factory-Road-Triathlon-Fulcrum-Racing-7-Black-Wheels-Pair/FULCWHFR250, or even if I save up a bit more the Mavic Aksiums http://www.ribblecycles.co.uk/sp/road-track-bike/Wheels-Factory-Road-Triathlon-Mavic-Aksium-Race-Clincher-Wheels-Pair/MAVIWHFR775

Does anyone have any experience with the planet x's?

Here's how the frame looks at the moment, with the front and rear mechs mounted.

  • Re forks there were some cheap 1" carbon deda ones on retro bike.

They've got hidious red decals, but you could probably sand them off or just spray them Matt black.

  • cheers, but i think I'm gonna get the Tifosi carbon forks, as they give me the option of running mudgaurds - I've got the set which the previous owner butchered to fit.

  • I think I'd have the Aksiums, in fact I nearly did for mine. The Planet X are a little garish, although logo removal is a good option, as Hugo said.

  • cheers for the advice, still need to save up for the wheels, so have a while to decide. Have got another option, novatech 10spd hubs to mavic open pro from my lbs near my parents house in Reading... they would give a nice classic look.

  • cheers, but i think I'm gonna get the Tifosi carbon forks

My 2p .. The Minimal is the nicer fork ..
The fork crown of the Tifosi looks like it is designed for an integrated headset frame so there maybe a bad transition (depending on your headset and the actual fork crown size) between headset and fork from an aesthetic point of view. The minimal has a sloping crown to work with an external traditional headset.
The frame has no mudguard eyelets at the rear so you'll need to bodge a rear guard on .. I'd prefer to have a cleaner no eyelet fork and use race guards bodged as needed. And on a related point depending on the clearance of the frame and the Tifosi fork you may need a deeper drop brake on the front then the rear as the fork is designed to take guards. That should be an issue on the minimal.
Probably not a concern but the Tifosi quoted weight is almost twice the minimal quoted weight.
These are just some thoughts as I have no experience of the Tifosi fork.

  • Hmmm I think you're right about the integrated headset... hadn't noticed that before, the only reason I've swung toward the tifosi's before other than the mudgaurds is that they're more in my price range at the moment, but I guess waiting a little longer whilst I save won't harm...

  • Just a suggestion .. 'teaching you to suck eggs' .. set up an alert on eBay for the minimal forks. Like Dan I've seen them on there from time to time in both used and new. If you're lucky one will turn up, if not you're saving at the same time! I just think this bike is going to be a nice build and if there's something not quite right with the look of the Tifosi on the finished build you'll regret the buy straight away, while the minimal is the 'safe' option.

  • Yes you're right Oswald, will deffo do that.

The remainder of the groupset turned up on monday... it was very exciting.

  • loving all the shiny campag bits, looking good!

  • cheers, so am I! Unfortunately the bike/project is at home at my parents, whilst I'm at uni, so progress has been quite slow! That package arrived about an hour before my train back up to London!

  • This looks like a nice build!

  • Get on with it man, I'm itching to see this!

  • So am I! Made some small progress today - bought the bars - Deda Piega's. But will hopefully get a move on soon!
