  • Go for chrome/black and put on some road bars with some nice levers, like sram s500 or s900. Just like superjoe's bridgestone, which is lovely.

buy some black Gipiemme's from this guy:
    http://www.tontacycles.com/

Really nice chap and his wheels aren't expensive.

Cheers and keep us informed with your progress.

Who's superjoe? (sorry I'm new on here :) I like the look of the gipiemme rims. Question: what's the breaking performance like when running non machined in the front? Or for safetys sake is this not recommended? Aesthetically I'm not keen on the machined look.

    Cheers for the feedback guys.

  • The gipiemme rims look nice, I'd also be interested in the braking performance and how they'll look after being used for a while? Also, does anyone know how heavy they are?

I recently had to go through the same decision as I wanted black wheels as well. I ended up with the on-one wheelset with machined braking surface, but looks wise I'm not entirely happy with them.

  • I've read in a previous thread that the on one set are a good weight / price compromise. Did they not come in non-machined version?

The gipiemme a40 pista set weigh a ton - 2.5kg+, is this not really heavy? http://www.planet-x-bikes.co.uk/i/q/WPGIPA40L/gipiemme_pista_a40_wheelset

Compared to the likes of shimano non aero wheels these types of rim make a massive difference in weight. What do you guys do when on the track? Doesn't the rotating weight factor slow you down or is a case of changing wheels depending on the occasion?

  • Doesn't seem like there's an option for non-machined: http://www.on-one.co.uk/i/q/WPOOPOMP/on_one_120mm_clincher_wheels_(pair)

2.5 kg seems really heavy. I'm no expert on the subject, but ~600g more than the on-one 120mm set above, which is fairly inexpensive and not really particularly lightweight as far as I can gather, just seems like a lot. Of course the Gipiemme are ~15mm deeper, but 600g just really is a lot. Apart from the frame, I don't see any single component (okay, it's two wheels, but still) on a bike where you would be able to save that much weight and for very little money as well.

  • Naah skip the deep V look, so last week. Mate what you need are a pair of gunmetal grey (ish) Mavic MA40 or Wolber rims. Tidily set of that chrome they will. High flange retro hubs to if you please....

  • Oh, gumwall 20c tyres, tan track grips and a tan Brooks-a-like saddle, cranks like that gorrrrrgeous Pinny and a stainless track chain from DID. Quill pedals with tan straps and new toeys and you are away. Now that's sorted off to get some tiffin...

  • Tan contact points on chrome frame with black decals?? U mad bro?
    Black all the way.
Braking on non-machined rims is absolutely fine, after a while they'll look a bit grotty but thats about it.

  • Im definately feeling the black/chrome scheme. looking at building up a set of either of these rims from scratch - they are the lightest weight of v / semi v at a reasonable price point. Will do the rear with a cog bolted to a shimano disc hub, and a lightweight shimano low flange (road) front hub. Butted black spokes.

    Any advice on these rims?
    Mach1 omega (22mm, 490g and £15 a pop)
    Rigida dp18 (40mm, 590g and £20 each)

I estimate I could build a set for between 80-100£ and definitely lighter than the gipiemme pista at 2.5kg. Only downside is that none of those rims come in non-machined walls. Anyone have any experience in 'painting' over the machined bits?

  • A brev.m 130bcd 46t chain ring in black. Reasonably light weight alloy.

  • Shimano fc6400 ultegra crank arms that go with the above ring. Happens to fit the sq taper bb that's already on the frame. I like these :)

  • I like them too, now i've seen this I'm looking forward to see it build up.

  • I used to ride DP18's on my beater, also built onto a XT/Tomicog setup, and they're really strong, however it gives for a stiff, unpleasant ride (it realy carries through the vibrations) in comparison to something lower such as some Open Pro's or CXP 33's, so it depends on where you'll use the bike. Lots of stoplights and rougher roads? Go for something low, as the Mach1 rim you posted.

The bolt on cogs run great though, I definitely recommend it. Make sure you space the hub right with the lugged alu construction to avoid any chance of them working loose.

  • Hey, just posted my own Koga build here: http://www.lfgss.com/thread83755.html, if you're looking for inspiration :)

  • One of these bikes passed through my hands some time ago. It had Shimano 600 Ultegra though which looked much better than the Sante imo:

  • Nice, I've always wondered what the deal was with the co2 cans? Just for the tyres?

  • A 1" polished black alu riser bar :p

A pair of plastic gusset translucent black bmx pedals

Restrap pedal straps (diagonal screw on fitting)
Managed to find them used on eBay. They're really expensive for what they are though!

  • Got a nice deal on this stem via eBay :)
    Kore elite 60cm

Just had a look. Really like it. The frame appears to be in amazing condition!

  • Thanks. Well, the frame does have some scratches and nicks, however for a 30 year old frame, it's in really nice condition.

Look forward to seeing what your build will look like. Seems you're going for a fairly modern look.

  • Mildly confused by the choice of stem. Doesn't look like a quill to me?

good point.. im using one of these threaded to ahead adaptors
    http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/protec-ahead-converter-prod3063/

  • speaking of which.. does anyone have any opinions on the ahead adaptor + ahead stem vs. an all in one quill solution? im a bit concerned now about the extra weight... that adaptor seems a bit heavy to me.

  • What do you mean by an 1" bar...?

Don't worry to much about the weight.. the frame is steel.

1" rise, 25.4 clamp diameter. the frame is 6000 series alloy

  • Just get a quill stem. That kore thing is pretty painful on the eyes anyway, especially compared to the skinny tubes.
