Still rather be insured for 10 years and not have to claim, than buy a bike and have it nicked the next afternoon.
Peace of mind on something like this is pretty important to me.
Use a car evey day - you insure it (well, you have to), but if you didn't and it was destroyed and you couldn't afford to replace it, you'd be screwed wouldn't you?
No different with me biek IMO. Going to find it hard going without a bike for a week let-alone 2/3/4 months to save for a new one -

a tear and a stain on a suit is like a scratch or a chip on a bike (dent, even)
wouldn't claim insurance on that on a bike.
-
• #454
This insurance argument is completely pointless
-
• #455
If you lose a suit you probably shouldn't have had that 8th chaser pint after work

Nothing in their terms says your accident has to be due to somebody else being at fault. My insurance policy covers specifically for Malicious damage or theft by others, and **NON-COSMETIC **damage whilst out on the road.
I already have the safety check / report from Sigma, stating the bike is a total write-off, i.e. strongly advising that it not be ridden again, the damage being so extensive. The insurers say Sigma's report *should *be fine if supported by the photos of my injury/injuries and each visible bit of damage to the bike.
Not expecting a full replacement but hoping for most of it, or enough towards (as someone put it) a "better" bike...
Good news, presumably they're paying for the damage you did to the car too?

be hard-pressed to find any normal priced insurers that will even consider paying out for damage to paint work as far as I know.
If you did your premiums would pay for a new bike over the space of a year anyway ;) -

Unfortunately not. Thought I had public liability but don't - will have to wait for driver to get in touch with me (if/when) and maybe my credit card will come in to play once I see a quote from a reputable* garage....
*HAHAHAHAHAHA, yeah RIGHT

Read the small print and good luck.

If you damage something you should pay. You were at fault, you caused the damage so therefore you should cough up. If you cycled into my car I'd cut your balls off if you failed to reimburse me for the damage that you caused.

Now that's an incentive to have insurance.

Exackery.

And if I don't have £200/300/400 cash sitting around? Like I said, credit card etc.
I've never tried to get out of paying for anything before and I don't intend to this time, but in this case I am going to wait for the guy to get in touch with me because as I've mentioned to other people, he was shifty as hell and wanted the police etc. to have nothing to do with it. In fact, I reckon I should have offered him 100 on the side of the road and he'd probably scarpered with it...

Isn't there an insurance thread?
Bet there is... -

If someone has damaged a car of mine in the past (be it a cyclist tearing of a £300 mirror or a pisshead chundering on it) I've always argued my point well and had the costs as well as my inconvenience covered.
It's not his fault that you a) rode into him and b) don't have that kind of cash laying about.
I would want it repaired within a reasonable time (by which time you'd be able to earn/borrow any cash) which I would be entitled to ask for.

My point was, I suspect it's a nicked motor...
Same opinion I got from 4 or 5 other people, when I explained that he wouldn't give me any insurance details and didn't want to get the police involved."Ooohhh, dets gonna be ekpensive I fink"... he kept on repeating, scratching his head. I'm certain he was angling for me to offer some sort of roadside settlement as some sort of bonus to his 'new' car.
Speculation of course,

• #466
He may have assumed you were on a nicked bike.
-
• #467
Maybe he thought your accent was funny...
-
• #468
if you're unsure, you could always check.

I meant about the car being stolen

Would you insure an expensive suit?
What if you tear it, stain it, lose it?Home contents cover should do it, less any excess of course.
And of you don't you've been screwed
