  • Thans Velocio, giving their 7 day trial a shot, so far getting speeds between 7 and 18 so definitely faster!

  • Which NAS/VPN combo were you guys talking about a little while ago? My UTFS Fu is weak today...

I'm getting an NAS and thinking about encrypting all my trafficz while I'm at it...

  • For NAS I recommend QNAP ones, and you basically purchase by the number of drives you want to put in it. http://www.qnap.com/uk/index.php?lang=en-uk&sn=5050&c=2485&sc=2491 just choose based on number of drives, and then look at when each one of the drive number was released and buy the most recent one. If you intend to run bittorrent or a media server on the NAS you may find it cheaper and easier to buy additional RAM (usually only an extra 1GB) at time of purchase. I run full hard drive encryption on my storage, and the only hassle is that when I restart the NAS (very seldom) I have to go to the web management screen to enter the password.

For a router that can support OpenVPN at decent speed I recommend the Asus RT-N66U. I use a Merlin firmware http://www.lostrealm.ca/tower/node/79 as it is identical to the Asus firmware but a couple of additions that make the OpenVPN client easier to configure and manage.

    For a VPN service I recommend https://www.iVPN.net .

All of the above I use daily, and have been through various competitors and lots of dull research before buying the above.

  • Cheers, David... That's super helpful...

  • 1password users:

do you have the mobile app aswell as the desktop?

ive been trialling the mac app and want to take the plunge, but the extra £13 for the iphone app is pretty dam steep, im trying to imagine how often i would need a password on my phone when my laptop wasnt around, not very often

however im sure there will be the dire situation this occurs...

  • I've got it and it is pretty handy. Pretty sure I didn't pay £7 though, think I got it in a sale.

    If you check here: http://appshopper.com/productivity/1password-2
It'll tell you when there has been a price drop. If you sign up it will notify you when the next one is.

  • Sep 17 '13 £5.49 -> £12.99

jesus... missed the boat on that one

  • £13 is steep for that. It's very handy though, syncs automatically over dropbox so no need to think about passwords ever again. Only annoying thing is that it now uses the same long password on both places, rather than a shorter mobile specific one.

  • maybe ill just hold out on dedicating everything to 1password till after the new year, when its inevitably in some sort of january sale

  • just worried about getting stuck needing to log into my email and having a dead laptop or something

  • Key pass DROID. Free. Does same thing no?

  • cant see an ios app called that? key pass anyway

  • the world has gone crazy over here. was just reading that the military is trying to stop people who have been tortured giving evidence as they might give away military secrets (ie: how they were tortured).

  • IVPN tip, cancelled before the 7 day trial ended and I got a near immediate offer of a 30% discount on any of their subscriptions.

  • Getting a supported router and flashing dd-wrt on to it is worth a look too if you want a router that with an OpenVPN client.

  • pfSense and some custom hardware is worth a look too. Can buy small boards like this with enclosures. High up on the nerd scale though.

  • Climb the nerd ladder!

  • oops, sorry - assumed there would be an ios version of key pass - shame, it's really good

Yet another reason to lock down your home connection. Pretty cheeky of LG, especially their 'deal with it' response.

  • that's really scary. Does anyone have a list of domains/ip's that can be loaded into ipfw so my router just blocks it all automatically ?

  • In the Android thread you'll find such a list on pretty much the last page.

    I posted it.

  • ah awesome, thanks V

  • No worries, and I've just emailed the guy who maintains that list to add the new hosts to it.

  • holy shit

    Winston was right
