  • That might be an idea: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/348109/is-double-hashing-a-password-less-secure-than-just-hashing-it-once

It's stupidly fast to rip through simple passwords. 10% were done in 10 seconds. I've got over half of them now, in a couple of hours, while doing other stuff.

These are md5 hashes. I think there are much stronger options and if user passwords weren't all so shit, it'd be slower.

  • return crypt.crypt(password, "$6$rounds=5000$%s$" % (salt,))

Not sure why I didn't catch this on Slashdot, but I now feel sad and a bit scared.

I'm not sure whether I would ever become the target for state terrorism (of whatever sort) but I don't feel entirely comfortable. Under the principle of "don't gamble what you can't afford to lose", combined with the efforts of service providers, banks etc to keep me happy through good customer service if my online identities are compromised, I never felt that concerned about it all.

On the other hand, many of the relationships and activities I value could be taken away from me by the state if they chose to somehow undermine the trust people hold in me.

Celebrities often experience this at the hands of the media, but I don't expect them to actually lost everything.

If the state decides to paint me as suspicious, whether directly or by orchestrating some kind of dirty tricks campaign or rumour mill, it is not beyond their abilities to render me unemployable, unfriended and destitute.

I don't think this feeling is one that could be eliminated by migrating: I believe the intruments of the state are willing to make requests to allies and comply with the requests of allies. I am not confident that I could identify a safe haven which did not itself have similar issues or worse. Even states which might not comply might not be themselves aware of the presence of such instruments or agents.

I seem to have developed a tin foil hat and it's not very comfortable.

    I blame the Bourne Trilogy.

    Maaaat Daaamuuuun

  • that's pretty worrying

  • It's meant to be. :)

  • Shit's gettin' real..

  • We're completely fucked
Silver foil won't work any more

  • "Shit's gettin' real..."

Shit's gettin' real... => real shit => Foffa thread >>>

  • "We're completely fucked..."

Speak for yourself... a little more action my end wouldn't go a miss.

"Silver foil won't work any more..."

...don't wanna know, you sick fuck.

  • But if a clever software engineer cracks some security it's illegal.

Fuck you GCHQ! How many terror plots have been stopped with this tech? vs. how many girlfriends have been spied on or financial details exposed to allow a cheeky purchase here or a flutter there.

  • Doesn't surprise me in the slightest

  • Everything surprises me, everything.

Aluminium foil, teflon sheet then wire wool over the top. Works for me.

Hi guys, nice hats you're wearing.

  • Trying out Orbot, OrWeb and Gibberbot on the phone. Default settings disable js and don't provide user-agent so looking quite fugly.

Gibberbot adds loads of whitespace to Google Hangouts chat windows and is only encrypted if your chat partner has the client too.

I just wanted to point out that I don't know this fella. Thank you.

  • Got iVPN working on my Win7 box.

I used the pre-packed iVPN installer which includes OpenVPN. That didn't work so installed 54-bit OpenVPN (http://openvpn.net/index.php/open-source/downloads.html) over the top of it. Now it works. Coming to you from the Netherlands :)

  • Next step maybe Tor or EpicBrowser?

  • did you not follow the news?

  • Which bit of the news?

  • Well Tor got compromised by the police. All publicly used encryption methods are backdoored/compromised by the NSA.

Basically, short of using quantum encryption or writing your own, you're fucked.

  • I just read something on dark wiki and silk roads... Guess I've just put myself in their sights....

    Fuck sticks

  • omg... so the filters could "potentially" block VPNs as well. Some how I can't see corporations standing for this

No they're not. Some might be. Not everything. The NSA just buys and bullies its way into big companies, they don't have some magic key to unlock everything that's encrypted.

The only thing the police have ever compromised is innocent people.
