  • Just to add to the rumours, Kruse, Delamare & McLean just signed up for the GLWC in Toronto. New super team for 2014? We will see in Montpellier...

On that note, if you want a really fun weekend of polo in front of the biggest public audience since the LII, hockey (experienced and beginners), and getting drunk, come to Toronto for the GLWC at the end of Feb.

  • Kruse and Pierre - Awesome combo. Haven't seen enough of Red Beard playing to say if this is a good 3rd for them. They need a defensive/sweeper to balance out the attacking combo IMO.

  • Good line-up but lacking a quarterback.

  • Not necessarily true. McLean played quarterback very well and frequently for the Maker's at NAs. Very good in goal and intimidating in his own third due to his size and quick turning.

While far from slow himself, McLean, may also give some balance to Kruse and Delamare's speed through his excellent ball control and play making.

  • This thread needs to infographic!

  • How is quarterback defined as a polo player? I don't get 'merican football.

  • I haven't watched much American football but from what i've seen and relating it to Polo I'd say a strong defensive player who can feed long accurate passes up the court, calm, good ball control, able to hold the ball, fend off pressure and get the killer pass off that splits the defense. IMO

  • OED: "quarterback, a player stationed behind the centre who directs a team's offensive play."

And what Chan said, but not necessarily a defensive force IMO.

  • Has this been posted any where?

  • This is awesome. He nailed it:

Bike polo is a ludicrous activity, a construct of caucasian boredom, disposable income, and a certain existential uncertainty that comes with the transition from youth to adulthood. It is a liminal state between adolescence and domesticity, between self-service and responsibility, incompatible with meaningful maturity and a satisfying familial life. When it is seen as such, under the harsh honesty of florescent light, it is an incredible thing in which to participate. When this sense of transience is lost, or is ignored under the auspices of humorless competition, it becomes an ugly thing to watch, cringe worthy, like a Larry David moment in slow motion.

And it looks like Joe Spikes wrote it: http://hatingonbikepolo.com/me.html

  • The bit on how to defeat Beavers is pretty interesting with the block, block, shot.

    Head shot!

  • His other article is brilliant.

Everyone tries too hard, as though they could force legitimacy into this 'sport' through their exertion. Sweat beads on their brows, flows into their eyes, and blinds them to the fact that they are riding a thousand dollars of ill-spent money through an area of abandoned real estate pursuing a red glory which will forever allude them, all to the cheers of the deluded few. Mallets are thrown, fast friends exchange accusations of foul play, relationships end over a pass not made, tears are shed in defeat.

  • Looks like you got out at the right time Mrak.

  • This guy is my new polo hero...

  • Thanks.

The last three paragraphs of the second article I posted nail it for lots of people, I think. The people I've spoken to internationally recently (who've pulled back) and people I've spoken to about polo in the pub who ask why I'm not playing much anymore.

There was even an attempt to restart Downham weekend days (who knows, may still happen), but it got complicated trying to decide who's not serious enough to invite, and how do you enforce fun back into polo?

Having said that, all of you who are still having fun, rock on.

  • Nail on the head...

(Bottles for goals, or more players on each team, or goalies that can't leave their goal area, or an end zone with no goal at all might improve things.)

  • Time to quit then?

  • 4 v 4

    The natural evolution

  • Is the writer trying to convert people who like polo to hating it? Or unite people who do not like polo to reinforce their dislike and somehow stage some kind of protest?

It seems like he actually really likes polo and would like to instigate some rule changes to improve the sport. So he's spending quite a lot of time thinking about the game and would like to see a future?

So confuse. We all know polo is lame. But it's something to fill the time between working and realising you're going to die. So I'll keep at it for now.

This should be sprayed on the boards at every tournament everywhere.

It's very obviously and explicitly the latter.

I don't think polo has to worry about "uniting" people who "hate polo". Do such people exist? Why would they care?
