I thought someone had broke their leg , but apparently it was a flipflop freewhee gash.

Should that have been called during the bike check? Exposed pointy surfaces etc.

Should have been
§2.3.1.5–There are no sharp edges, points, loose screws, or otherwise unsafe parts (at the discretion of the referee).

Any issues with unused outward facing v brake mounts? Okay just to stick screws in them to prevent puncture wounds or would it be better to stick corks/tape or something around them.
-
• #1664
My On-One Inbred came with plastic covers over the bosses. See if someone else kept theirs.

Have asked around before, think corks will be easier and tastier to source...

Hmm, there are quite a few people who flip their wheel... It would be nice to be warned if we're going to be asked to remove them... Although I threaded my road gear last week, so will be removing it till I sort out a new hub... Would be nice to know before I build up another wheel...

I've been asked to take off a spare freewheel/fixed cog before, it depends who does your bike check.
I hadn't really thought of a spare freewheel/cog as dangerous before (especially at low teeth counts), but I guess they can do some damage...

Mines 12t, so pretty much as low as it's possible to go... The locking almost entirely covers it.

• #1669
Yeah, apart from the teeth, right?

Clip-on sprocket guards?

Yeah my memory of the lip on the lockring is more than reality.
How hard (or to be more accurate, how expensive) would a lockring with a big enough lip to cover say 16t be? A bash guard for cogs (would have the added advantage of stopping the chain from coming out) if you will.
Maybe I should suggest it to fixed craft (not sure how to make it work for freewheels...)

It doesn't have to be a permanent fixture.

Yup good idea, on a train so didn't wait to see the page load after posting, so didn't see your post.

Didn't I hear someone say last night it wasn't a freewheel, just the dropouts or something?
-
• #1675
It was the freewheel.
As far as I know Crandall got sliced to the bone, but is otherwise ok, just flesh wounds. He was very lucky he didn't cut an artery, or things could have been a lot more serious (and that was the reason I switched off the stream, as we didn't know the extent of his injuries at that point).
The NAH are implementing an immediate ban on exposed freewheels and fixed cogs. I don't know if that will be applied at the LO, but that's up to the organisers and rules people.
I really don't want to have to see anything like that ever again.
Sexcellent...
