WWI Top Gun: Revealed
The birth of the fighter plane between 1914 and 1918, tracing how the development of aircraft technology during the pressure cooker of war changed what was an eccentric folly into a deadly weapon. The documentary explores the brave new world of dogfights, aerial reconnaissance and bombing missions, as British pioneers such as Geoffrey de Havilland competed to outdo Anton Fokker, the Dutchman whose planes helped Germany dominate the skies. The story is rounded out with experiments and demonstrations using the Vintage Aviators, film-maker Peter Jackson's fleet of replica First World War aircraft. Last in the series

Rip-off!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horten_Ho_229The Ho.229 was a response to a 1943 RFP, by which time the design work on the B-35 was already under way. The B-49 was just a jet powered development of the B-35. The Hortens were not the only designers interested in flying wings during the 1920s and 30s, so it's not certain that Northrop's sole inspiration came from the German designers.

F32 not looking so silly now, eh?
Am I missing something? I can't see how the failed Boeing X-32 (which never got an F designation, since it never proceeded beyond experimental status) is relevant to the continuing balls up on the UK
white elephantsitting duckjob creationpork barrelcarrier programme. -
• #623
You're right, I should've said X-32. Just referring to the ongoing troubles with the F35's over-complicated STOVL fan arrangement.
Those carriers might have some planes to launch if they selected the X-32 with its simpler, Harrier-like vectored thrust arrangement.

The question is moot; since we won't have AEW radar or enough surface combatants to form a carrier battle group, the one carrier which is actually going to be commissioned had better not sail to anywhere dangerous anyway, so any air combat needs can be met from UK air bases using the Typhoon/Tornado mix.

I can't believe we're still using tornados... If it ain't broke etc.
