To be fair the normal take offs look weirdly slow too because of the vertical lift fan…

I do like how the MOD are sticking with "crashed shortly after take off" rather than, "fell off the front".

I suppose it depends on when you call the crash. The wheels seem to have been touching the deck when the pilot left, but on the other hand there must have been a period of time during which the aircraft was touching neither the ship nor the sea 🙂

I posted an explanation yesterday then had a panic that it wasn't public knowledge because of what my source does for a living but it turns out its fine.
Somebody forgot to take the intake rain covers off and the pilot didn't notice in pre flight checks.

Ah right, yep, forgot it was STOL.

MoD's insurance only covers incidents in the air 😂

I wonder if you can insure a fighter and how much the premiums are if so?

Am very surprised that an aircraft engine can be started with the intake covers on. Even more so that it will apparently operate with no indication that something's not right.
Edit: Article actually says rain cover but I've no idea which that is. Over the lift fan?

Same. If that explanation holds true, then I suspect that pilot might have some questions to answer.
The rain cover explanation matches the opinion of somebody I know who is professionally familiar with deck ops on the QE. Otherwise I'd have just dismissed it as unbelievable I think!

Of course, my source could have just read it on the internet I guess. I doubt it though.

Yes (excluding War Risks) and no idea now.

I forget the term for it, but don’t all ac-launched planes fall for a good many feet at the end of the runway? This one just kept falling.

See they salvaged the F-35.
Mile down apparently.
Bit like the arrested sailors ego.

There's a guy who's got a Griffon engine mounted on a trailer. Parks up and just lets it rip.

Brilliant. Thanks for posting that

Worked on those when built in to locos. Two opposed inline with a steam generator in between them.
One of the reasons behind my tinnitus. -

Gotta love that rolling on the brakes.

Nice. As part of my job I get to piss about on a BR Class 55 "Deltic" loco.
