If I recall correctly the A-10 has been designed with a low stall speed because the power of that gun is so great it will slow the aircraft down.

Not true. The gun does slow it down slightly, but the typical 1/2-1 second burst is only measureable rather than noticeable. Pretty sure it didn't have any effect on the design.

well i'm guessing the low stall speed part is true, look at the wings, also its a ground attack aircraft so it doesn't need to be fast

• #130
holy fuck
haha that is exactly what I thought when I saw that picture.

now i see why the taleban fear these so much
Not just the Taliban...

Notice how long a gap there is between the rounds hitting the ground and the sound of the gun being fired.

the americans use these planes for friendly fire incidents too don't they ?
-
• #133
If the second round being fired is that buzz at the beginning I count about 20 seconds?
Sounds like the God of Thunder has the squits. Impending doom.

Wasn't it redesigned to accommodate the cannon more centrally because it was causing yaw when fired?

The first sound on the video is the aftermath of the first burst. The muzzle sound from that arrives about five seconds in. Then there's the second burst at 0:24, and the sound about six seconds later.
Apparently if you're lucky enough to be between the aircraft and target, you're also treated to the sound of the supersonic shockwave as the 30mm rounds pass over your head. I'd imagine that's quite something.

yeah makes me want to join the army just to find out

Yes, one can only imagine how lucky someone feels when they are in this situation.
Jesus fucking wept. These are killing machines, not toys to get hard ons over.

The gun is offset to the left because it fires when the barrels are at the 9 o'clock position. This puts the firing barrel in the centre, avoiding yaw.

no, yaw a warthog

That cannon fires depleted uranium tipped shells too, the A10 has always had the nickname 'Tank Buster' for good reason.
Also leaves chunks of toxic and (slightly) radioactive metal all over the middle east.

so do iran

Yup, but Iranians are from Iran.

On max fire it runs out in ~15 seconds anyway so you wouldn't want to hold the trigger down for longer than a second at a time.

Who's getting a hard on?

I'm in it for the engineering.

This pic makes the beetle one look somewhat fake.
EDIT: Okay, not fake, but "nicely" done. -

Brun for a start.
I fucking hate the 'defence industry' for a myriad of reasons, from the spurious PR bullshit it spouts, the fact that it trivialises the killing and maiming of civilians and the cosy relationship it has with government who waste massive amounts of public money on vanity projects.

Hovercraft are much better.

Do we have a thread of that?

If only we did.
