• he's not trying to rid the world of evil you know, just remove his cog

sorry misread op

• Me too.

• +1000 for rotafixing, learn skillz, you will like yourself more.

• wd40 did it XD
eventuly

• Oh well, ive got half a can of rotafix at home if anyone needs it

• Put a chain whip in a vice and turn the wheel like a possessed captain Ahab?

This.
If you've got a bench mounted vice, squirt on a drop of plusgas, leave for an hour, wrap chainwhip round cog and clamp in vice. Then use the force!

• My cogs is seized to my hub. I like it.

• gives me less in life to worry about.

• Give it the BEANS!

• PM Balki, what that man doesn't know about seized cocks isn't worth knowing.

Give it the BEANS!

What did I say!

• heh... I didnt see your post.

• My cog has seized.
Have tried plus gas and rotafix. Brixton cycles tried to remove it but apparently broke two chain whips trying to get it off.
My next thought is to try some heat. Does anyone know a mechanic with a blowtorch (or suitable tool) and experience of removing cogs this way?
It's a Phil Wood hub so want to make sure this isn't damaged too badly in the process, but accept i may lose some threads.

• I would try cutting it with a slitting disc. Should be able to cut most of the way thru without damaging the threads then a little impact technology to split the cog.

• Use a bench vice, clamp the cog, twist the shit out of it.
As long as you spin the wheel in the right direction, it will come off.

• second the vice method - use the wheel as leverage

could damage the sprocket but should get it off

• thanks for the tips...now i just need to find a willing workshop!

• We've got a bench vice in Micycle, islington. We also have a blow torch.

I remember tester saying something along the lines of a good chainwhip supplying more leverage than the rim alone though, so you may end up cutting it off, as suggested, above.

• i suggest the wd40 l/plusgas and old hoover tube.

ive just my mums old one on my last two seized cogs. just mount the chain tool, slide the tube over the handle and push (anti clockwise with the cog facing you).

sinple mechanics really, you have about 5x more leverage and can use your whole body weight to give it a push.

any long tube with sufficient inner diameter will do

• That's a good trick, BC must have tried it already though - If they are busting chainwhips, getting sufficient leverage probably isn't the problem.

• if youre going to go down the vice route, i would clamp the sprocket in wood either side, just to give it something to bite in to and hopefully not chew the teeth up so much.
