  • Wow, no posts in this thread for over a year before the weekend, what a bunch of cultural philistines we are.

Last year I think I only went to the cinema twice, having a real job means no more day tickets. On the plus side, having a more-than-minimum-wage job means occasional reasonably priced tickets.

I saw Chimerica when all the hype was at its peak and thought it was fantastic, really engaging piece of theatre with a great set and some excellent acting. It was generally well-praised but some people criticised it a bit for the Chinese segments. Having never been to mainland China I can't really comment on that, but everything looked great and the story was really well-told.

I also saw A Doll's House (this production) which was great as well. Again, I wasn't familiar with the story at all but it was instantly accessible, shocking and sad.
I was thinking that, hence my post.

I played Nora once - love Ibsen's work.

Haven't even been to the cinema for over a year, let alone theatre.

Must try harder to play more this year.

  • I've been a member if this fine rep company since 1989.. http://www.towertheatre.org.uk
It's been a while since I have been involved technically, but both my girls have tread the boards, sung and ASM
been to the wild post production parties.. Now that's wot I call an education.

39steps is still a good night out... and looking forward to a summer of plays at the Globe, Southwark x

Will you be repeating your theatres ride this year Al?

    I think you should!

  • I will ask Cameron Mackintosh if he can give us access again..
fings have changed a bit since the last architectural tour, miss mouse..
I may have to approach other venues..
    xx

  • Anyone seen anything small cheap and interesting recently?

  • Seeing Not I/Footfalls/Rockaby tonight. Will report in if theatre thread is being seriously revived.

^ That sounds like the first line of a rude joke :)

To answer the question though, I would like to see Emilia Fox in Rapture, Blister, Burn at Hampstead Theatre.

Tickets start at £15 for concessions.

  • PS: it was good, you all should go. ^^

  • Went to see Mojo last night. Unimpressed by over-acting cast.

  • ^^ dammit I forgot I asked here, that looked great. Bah. If anyone missed 1984 the fiorst time around, do try and catch it at the Almeida - it's one of the best things I've seen in years.

Been in and out of the Almeida website for two weeks now looking for tickets having spotted they were showing it when going to see American Psycho. It's a total sell out.

Think I might have to day-seat it, assuming they'll be operating that policy for it.

EDIT: A-ha! Just spotted that there's a few spares dotted around the headlong website. Hurrah!

  • Got return tickets for American Psycho on thursday. Bloody brilliant.

  • I heard really good things about American Psycho, I wish I'd been able to see it.

I'm at the Young Vic hoping to get day tickets for A View From The Bridge. We read it in English in Year 9 and I've been hoping to watch it somewhere since. I hope there are actually day tickets.

  • A View From The Bridge is a fantastic play, so it would be quite hard not to make an impressive production, but the one at the Young Vic is fucking brilliant, I'm not sure I've seen a better play in London.

It's so visceral, and so well-acted, and completely captivating and finished with a near-universal standing ovation. For a £10 day ticket you really can't do better.

And I still can't believe Mark Strong is not actually from Brooklyn, he was completely and utterly convincing.

  • Well, I'm surprised to hear that. I thought the production lacked any sense of pathos. Mark Strong's character is a broken old man trying to save face, and casting him as a 6'3" muscle bound, fit middle aged man lost half the point of the play. The two immigrants were very good, though, especially the darker, quieter one.

What did you think of the set? I'm biased as I helped to build it. (expensive, elaborate waste of time...)

  • I came here to post this:

Where I'm performing my drag act, and Kazakh is singing with her band. All welcome, £5 on the door. x

  • Hey, @Clara is in a new play next Tuesday & Wednesday 16/17th at the Tristram Bates theatre. It's a rehearsed reading so at 3pm, but we want bums on seats so if anyone has a long lunchbreak (it's only an hour long) let me know. Check it out. That's her on the poster below that I did the photo for.

  • I went to see Yerma at the Young Vic on Friday. Billie Piper has come a long way since 'Because We Want To'.

Great play, very tense, very well staged and scripted, probably caused a few awkward conversations among audience members afterwards too.

In terms of intensity it problem wasn't quite as heavy as People, Places and Things, which I saw earlier in the year and which was phenomenal.

Definitely worth trying to get day tickets for though if you're some kind of layabout.

    Also, has anyone seen 1984?

  • Saw 1984 at the Almeida Theatre when it did its first run. Thought it was a very good interpretation of the book, and would recommend it to anyone with a passing image. Some clever staging throughout and a terrific 'revolve' moment.

Was shortly after American Psycho in the same theatre, which was comfortably one of the best things I've seen on stage ever. They've teased that it'll be making a transfer to the West End for a while now - once it does I will certainly be making a visit.

  • I had a nice chat with Ian McKellen and his manager/mate/co star/couldn't place him, outside Wyndham's Theatre. The wizard Lord complimented me on the restoration work we did back in 2008 and how the auditorium and foyers space still look fresh and feel gorgeous. I mentioned that in 2007 I gave Patrick Stewart a personal tour of the Gielgud Theatre after we restored front of house, auditorium, stage house, dressing rooms. Ian said he might take up an offer of a tour. Both starring in Harold Pinter's No Man's Land, hot from runaway success on Broadway. There was a time I could sneak in previews, via stage door.

In other news, booked to see Waiting for Godot (understudy performance), at St James' Theatre, Victoria.

  • My friend John has his debut play on at Theatre 503 in March.

Called 'The Monkey', it's a darkly comic tale of dishonourable thieves, based in south London.

  • Anybody seen something good recently?

I'm looking for a good show to send a client to. Have ruled out Shakespeare, Kite Runner and American in Paris because reasons.

  • The Ferryman at the Gielgud. Brilliant. 3 hours of edge of the seat story telling. Now I'm not good in theatres. Sleep overcomes me. Comfy seats in the dark? I'm gone. Cinemas too. Not this time I was wide-eyed awake throughout. Proper theatre.
