  • Hm.. We'll see. Sorry i dunno the inch units. What would be 73? (how tó count it? formula?) 18t is the max i do, is that ok? Thanks!

  • ^^ back in the day, it was a simple calc:
27 (being the nominal wheel size)
    x teeth on chainring
    / teeth on sprocket

    ie: 27x46/18=69 simples!

  • ALL:
The meeting point for the ride is the church on Warwick Avenue.

This is the route that we are using

(Please note you can download a GPX if that's your thing, if you're awkward and want a TCX PM me your email address before Thursday evening).
For those riding fixed or SS, please check the profile (Show & Elevation Profile on the above link) and select an appropriate gear. The uphill, though not steep, is fairly relentless.

    FAST GROUP PLEASE NOTE:

20mph over this distance is 'actually fast', not just 'forum fast'. I don't know what object's thoughts are on the matter, but as previously mentioned I plan not to stop, and not to go easy. If you're in the fast group and you can't hang on, you better have a contigency plan, or shuffle over to the slower group.

Owing to the above riders in the fast group should be prepared to get themselves to Bletchley if they fall off the back. Again self-sufficiency is key.

Stolen and edited from TNRC protocol:

    Equipment

spares -make sure you have spare tubes and tools - Self sufficiency is key. If you cant fix your bike you need an exit plan.
Food - have whatever you need for 85k.
Money - Have some. you may need to get home from outside london in a taxi if things go pear. It has happened before and it will happen again.
Maps - For your own safety know where you are and how to get home. OS maps, print outs or Garmins are welcome.
phones - although there is often no coverage it is essential to be in touch. make sure you have some numbers on the ride.

    Etiquette

Ride leaders / backstops - the general gist of it is that leaders get pissed off when other riders shoot off the front stretching the ride and then making it more likely that people get lost etc. Backstops are the unsung heroes who often find themselves helping out the lost and the tired.

Shouts and hand signals - We do not recommend waving cars through for liability reasons. We do recommend shouting 'single up' to get riders in front over to the side so the car is past as soon as possible.

Messages - pass messages forwards or backwards clearly.

    Questions?

  • I'll be waiting for the slow group in Barnet - at the top of Hendon Wood Lane. At 15mph yous lot should be there about 9.15

Might try and get a larger sprocket (scared by object's gradient comment)

  • This is all looking far too serious for me, and for that reason I am out.

  • why not do the slow paced ride?

  • ^^ back in the day, it was a simple calc:
27 (being the nominal wheel size)
    x teeth on chainring

    Great! (I guessed 67,5... =76/(46/16)x(46/18) but the 76 was just 'around76' soo 77,6)
(Would be funny if I couldn't go to the geek's ride after these 'lots of' calculations... ;S)

  • Questions?

Hi guys, this ride sounds really cool and i'm keen but i've never been on a forum ride before so not sure if I turn up for the fast group whether i'll be turned away and given funny looks if I turn up in my lycra get up seeing as though its a fast ride and a fair distance.

I take it everyone else will be in 'normal' cycling clobber rather than what they wear for cycling around the city?

Sorry if i've just come across as a complete ignoramus

  • If you're capable of hitting that speed for that distance in anything other than lycra you are a far better rider than I. I probably should have stressed that the fast group is composed of roadie scum. Gears, Lycra, caffeine/electrolyte/carbohydrate filled water. Jersey pockets stuffed with food.

    PS. Nice edit there 6pt.

  • PPS, I barely even ride around town in anything other than full lycra.

  • ^^I don't know what you mean.

If that's the case then I'll clear it with her indoors... sounds good though.

As i'm under the thumb i'll need an ETA for when we'll be getting back so I can go back to doing 'coupley' things. Any idea?

  • If you're on a strict deadline you could opt for the train return which should will get you on a train leaving Bletchley before 13:00 (Assuming there are no complications).

Beyond that I haven't specified a time for the return leg but I would expect it to be a slightly more leisurely pace dictated by how broken/tired people are after the ride out, how long we stop at the other end for food, what time the slower paced ride arrives. I aim to make evening plans if that's of any consolation?

  • ^^I don't know what you mean.

What he means is you do the math. If you time the course at 2:51h at around 18mph I might be able to hang on which would be fun.

  • you do the maths

    .

  • What does that mean?

sounds good to me! i should be up for this then

  • What does that mean?
    Math is wrong (American).
    Maths is correct (English).

  • this course looks a lot hillier than i was lead to believe.

if the climbers go full power on the climbs and don't let up at all, i will get dropped.

  • That's how I felt on the recce.

  • i need a garmin. anyone selling a barely used edge 800 super cheap??
