  • yep, defensive riding in the primary position is going to make all those taxi's just "poof!" away.

I like how people try to read between the lines, and get it wrong! ;)

all i care about is, can I tell a cabbie he's a cunt for driving on the bus lane when he has no passengers or not?

In any case, thanks for the concern, I'll call you guys next time I feel a little scared and insecure ;)

  • Or don't worry about it and carry on riding.

  • i believe they can.

i also believe google is your friend.

I don't like the term 'defensive riding'. Being assertive is not the same as being defensive. Taking the primary position increases your visibility and makes it clearer to other street users what you're doing; I wouldn't describe it as 'defensive'. When people use that word, it's usually coupled with obvious nonsense like 'assume that everyone is out to kill you'. I know you don't mean it that way; I just thought I'd mention it.

  • @velo, 'militant' cyclist? c.J.Vine

  • i'm not sure, do you mean, am i a militant cyclist? the only time i have been militant towards a driver was when they drove into the back of me when i was stopped at a red traffic light in the middle of the road. bang "what the fuck?" "sorry mate, no need to swear, i thought you were going to jump it". cue tirade of abuse.

apart from that, i seem to experience little driver aggro/conflict. cycle training is the key.

That's interesting but does not address the question 'only cabbies with passengers can use the bus lane, true or false?'

  • Why would you want to tell a cabbie he or she is a cunt? What's the point?

  • Yeah, I'm a foul-mouthed hater and even I can think of better things to be doing. So long as they're driving sensibly they're fine.

  • all i care about is, can I tell a cabbie he's a cunt for driving on the bus lane when he has no passengers or not?

You can tell a cabbie he's a cunt whenever you like. However, if they're not being a cunt then the joke's on you

  • Why would you want to tell a cabbie he or she is a cunt? What's the point?

Just in case they start it -- annoying the idiot by taking a sanctimonious high moral ground. If they don't cause bother I don't cause bother.

  • all addison lee drivers should be referred to in this manner however they're driving

  • i was reading some interesting thing in the course of trying to find references for this, that at the time of writing of the article that i was reading (can't remember which) there were 50,000 minicabs, 2,400 of which were Addison Lee, and 25,000 black cabs.

25,000 Licensed Taxi drivers, but only about 20,000 cabs.

  • i'm not sure, do you mean, am i a militant cyclist?

Because you said defensive instead of assertive.

  • yep about right. mini cabs are growing very quickly. they are not allowed in bus lanes. though they are trying to get in (support by addison lea). around 20-30k

cabs are allowed in most bus lanes but not all (some operational ones are excluded eg. t-square to the strand).22k

cabs are good as accountable through licensing training system. mini cabs are not.

  • "sorry mate, no need to swear, i thought you were going to jump it".

    haha, quality

  • cabs are good as accountable through licensing training system. mini cabs are not.

Not sure what you meant by this, Minicabs are also accountable via a licensing system, enforced by the same people.

  • Defensive cycling appears to be used in the same context as defensive driving - specifically, it is anticipatory and risk averse.

hmmm maybe this is why i said defensive - i.e. from my driving test.

  • Defensive cycling appears to be used in the same context as defensive driving - specifically, it is anticipatory and risk averse.

The comparison partly holds true--the kind of cycling that cycle training advocates is also termed 'vehicular cycling' by John Forester, as it takes a lot of cues from how people use four-wheeled motorised vehicles. However, not entirely, as there are plenty of aspects of the method for cycling which do not correspond.

The term assertive could, and often is, conflated with aggresive.

That may be so, but in its proper meaning it means behaving in such a way that you're OK and the other person is OK, too, with what happens.

    Tomato, potato.

There's only two veg in your reply, no meat, which is just how I like it. :)

  • your post is alarmingly tinged with sexual metaphor, oliver.

  • well, as long as it's consensual, or assertive, as you put it.

  • Not sure what you meant by this, Minicabs are also accountable via a licensing system, enforced by the same people.

very different licensing system by the same people.
taxi = the knowledge and regular vehicle checks
minicabs = turn up with license and police check.
also a very diffeent level of accountability.

  • your post is alarmingly tinged with sexual metaphor, oliver.

well, as long as it's consensual, or assertive, as you put it.

Ha, it was a trap to reveal what you would read into it. :)

  • Hey! Tomatoes are fruit, you doofus.
