  • Just seen exchange between dude from the times and mp for blackpool where they rule out behavioural change measures in favour of engineering facilities for cyclists... wonder if these exchanges are binding?

Pretty easy to segregate one of the triple layers along the blackpool area coast, designate it a cycleway and say 'were sorting it'
    Blackpudlians- prove me wrong please.

  • ^ they were talking nationally. unless I got wrong end of stick... vid link to follow...

  • "I'm Jon Snow. I'm president of the CTC, but I don't come here in that capacity. I'm a citizen and I anchor the Channel 4 news.

He's president of the Cycle Touring Club? a man who openly said that cycling is dangerous? huh, I didn't know that.

  • He's president of the Cycle Touring Club? a man who openly said that cycling is dangerous? huh, I didn't know that.

When did he say that? He's a very vocal cycling advocate.

  • oh he does support cycling but also went on to said that it's quite dangerous, it was in The Times when they first brought out the campaign.

it was dicussed here briefty, let me see if I can find it.

  • found it, very much a scaremongerer;

Virtually every urban cycling day, something happens that takes me to within a second or two, or even an inch or two of danger.

My children were deprived of the right to cycle to school, even of the right to cycle safely at university - it was, and is quite simply too dangerous.

It is the absolute fact that half a tonne of vehicle, and 80kgs of bike and human simply cannot co-exist in the same road space safely.

  • oh, i see, it was in the context of "cycling is dangerous but it shouldnt be" rather than "cycling is dangerous so people shouldnt do it".

no need to spend ages digging the quote out. sorry

  • ah, you beat me to it.

i see what you mean about scaremongering but perhaps his heart is in the right place.

He took over the CTC job when Phill Ligget gave up quite a few years ago now

Loved the guideline on the yellow bike, very positive.

  • So today in the times Peter Tatchel calling for helmet compulsion, like in Oz-tray-lear.

    Discuss.

  • Wrong thread >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>http://www.lfgss.com/thread1525.html

  • fits in either, this thread is about the times cycling campaign.

I'm not asking if helmets should be compulsory, but should The Times writers be allowed to set this agenda on "our" behalf?

  • The problem is that the Times campaign is primarilly run by journalists, not cyclists.

  • So today in the times Peter Tatchel calling for helmet compulsion, like in Oz-tray-lear.

Email him and put him right Andy.
He's a nice man but very busy

  • The ipayroadtax lobby are onto him already.

  • Ah good.he will soon see the truth and join the struggle against the reactionary fascist bossclass capitalist oppressors that impede our brothers and sisters progress

  • thought he'd retired from all that?

  • hes mellowed but no, hes still on the side of the oppressed
just couldnt believe the 'Material world' on R4
    all about automotive intelligence
Just berated their email system for entirely omitting mention of bicycle in their 15 min report on future of transport
    fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu..........

  • Yes so strange that in a program talking about technological solutions for future congestion problems the original and relevant solution un-mentioned again by the BBC.
Need to write to feedback (again)

  • Nice piece in The Times this morning on "Why I love my bike". Then I saw the brakeless fixed gear with flat pedals and no foot retention. Yuk.

  • At The cycling hustings last night, attended by Mrs Dorling, Brian Dorling's widow, Boris makes hilarious jokes about dreadlocked cyclists jumping red lights, it doesn't go down well:
