Julian Huppert is a clever bloke. He's a a scientist, good at maths
I really liked what he said, and Maria Eagle, the shadow Transport Secretary. -

Huppert was the year above me at school. He was clever then too.

Sounded like a pretty balanced positive debate. Heard summary on R4 this morning - the integrated lights sounded like a good idea to me. RLJing pisses me off, and the guy that brought it up, Bob Stewart, is a cyclist, who has been hit by traffic twice.
Harriet Harman's office have replied to my email to her to say, " I am putting out a call to all cyclists in Southwark to let me know areas that could be improved so these areas can be sorted out. Southwark's Labour Council have a strong commitment to cycle safety and have signed up to the Times 'Cities fit for Cycling' campaign. We need to work together to make Southwark a safer cycling borough.
Please do let me know your ideas on where and how we can make roads in Southwark safer for cyclists."
My current thinking is that I want to say changes need to be for the whole of central London, and, from my experinece, need to focus on increasing cyclists' legitimicy on the roads - for me the biggest problem I face is that no other road users seem to think cyclists have any right to use the road - we are tolerated trespassers.

Agreed. This is going to take a while to change though. The point that was made to stop calling crashes "accidents" was a good one. I'd love to see a law change that would make the motorised vehicle automatically at fault in the case of a collision. This would certainly help.

I don't think that it would help. Initially I think that the vast majority of motorists would feel that they are being victimised and would resent the legislation immensely, it could even make the us and them mentality worse.

Would depend on how this 'strict liability' was framed. I like the idea of linking it to momentum. Ie the vehicle able to do most damage would have initial responsibility so if a hgv hits a car the lorry driver would have assumed liability. A rider hits a walker then the rider is liable initially. Calling this 'momentum law'

Like with boats. V sensible.
-
• #560
Boats have no momentum on the road though.
-
• #561
Those DUCK tours boats do...
-
• #562
Damn exceptions to the rules.
-
• #563
A DUCK tour boat ran over one of our ride marshals in 2007, minor injuries and the bike was trashed.

What matters is what are the official instructions from daft.
If they don't lay it down its gonna be piecemeal all over u.k
All good having twenty zones when noone is gonna enforvce them -

That's the problem. My road has a 30mph limit, but that doesn't stop deranged drivers doing 45mph down there, despite it being a steep, narrow downhill with cars parked both sides, in a busy residential area. Makes me so angry.
-
• #566
don't get angry get even
-
• #567
Follow them home and ride up and down their street on my bike at 45mph?
-
• #568
No, write about them on the internet
-
• #569
Even if the drivers still flounce the speed limit, it would be 30mph over the 20mph limit, which is an improvement in itself (but still need more enforcement)

CTUK got an Email from a Chris Tarrant this morning:
How unfortunate and very omis to show a photo in todays Times of a rider (is it David Dansky, if so shame on him) of a cyclist with no helmet.
Safety campaign- what safety campain!
This http://www.thetimes.co.uk/tto/public/cyclesafety/article3328526.ece was in the same issue.

Ignore it he's a prick^ (assuming it is him off the telly)
-
• #572
I was wearing an LFGSS cap in the pic which, as we all know, is much better protection that any helmet
-
• #573
Also, he can't spell; it's "amiss", as in inappropriate or out of place.

^The guy used to be an English teacher, figures.

Takes one to know one, if it is Tarrant. He needs to get to grips with cutlery usage before preaching appropriate safety advice.
Perhaps the new currant bun on Sunday will take up the reins as sister paper to Times.and start with big family cycling section in first exciting issue.
Just a thought.
