  • I dont need a new bathroom but I wouldnt mind paying you a few quid if you want to come over to my flat in e3 to have a look at my sink. damn thing doesnt drain properly and Ive taken it to pieces to see if there are any blockages but there doesnt seem to be any.

    if youre interested drop me a line on 078 28 80 4 23 7

    ta

  • although that said if you cant find anyone else to take you up on this (very) kind offer, I could probably pursuade myself to get a new bathroom

  • I could be very very tempted. My plumber has a 'bad back' at the moment, and hasn't been round to fix some problems that he created last week. Not bad enough that he can't do other people's work, and appear to stumble out of the Effra Hotel last night around closing time.

There's probably a bit of flooring / bidet removal / tiling involved too if you need the £. Can provide labour and buckets of tea.

  • I live with a builder who is always moaning that he can not get a plumber and does bathrooms fairly regularly I can have word with him when do you want to do the work, where are you based? you are welcome to PM me

  • I promise to reply to you all tonight after 9 when I get home. Bit overwhelmed with so many offers of paid work. There are 8 chaps and a lady in my class dotted all over Essex, london and South Westish of Chessington. Might have to enlist some help. Would you all be interested in an area map we can all cover and an email address for each person? We are all in the same boat in terms of part-qualified, bags of personality and drive, but not necessarily in paid experience.
I ask this, as many of the PMs I have received, and again thanks for your confidence, have mentioned being let down or over-charged. I cannot say what they would ask for, but I am sure it will be fair. For myself, I will be fairly cheap and donate 10% after costs back here.
    You guys rock

  • I once had a plumber who "fixed" my leaking sink, only half a day later, it started leaking again and he together with his sodding company said they would give me a discount to come fix the leak again. Erm... they already charged me £120 to fix a leaking sink that remained leaking after... I want plumper friends who I can trust!

10% seems overly generous. Don't short change yourself. lfgss needs support but a £10-20 donation will more than likely suffice. Anyone else agree/disagree.

If you enlist other ppl for the work remember that you're taking on the job and paying them a day rate so charge more than you will be paying them (combined, plus your day rate). That way any problems are yours alone (client needs one person to talk to/discuss problems with) and any excess will (should) cover this. Effectively you're project managing (even if only on a fairly small scale).
In my experience building type work always overruns a bit so factor in some margin for this. Inevitably you will lose out on some jobs but thats where you'll learn.

You may be young and inexperienced but don't work for too little (not on paid work anyway).

Well, my friend, you are in luck as, even though I don't know anybodies last name, I trust them with my life. Literally. They could mess up and blow the centre up at any minute, but do you know what, we are all still here ;-)
One is also far from plump!

Thanks. I am not young and have been doing this kind of thing for years for family and friends for free, coz that's the kind of chap I iz.
I am not puttIng a crew together, merely offering you lovely people the chance to save some cash and help an up and coming star in the plumbing world.

  • fair enough

  • Sorry if I sounded harsh. I appreciate the advice. Just twogged what you meant that 10% could be huge , got expensive beer nd cheap women to buy.

  • haha, nope it wasn't harsh at all. No worries.

  • I tried to fix an intermittently leaking waste under a sink 2 or 3 times and each time it eventually leaked again. I sealed, tightened, resealed and retightened the thing and could not figure out why it kept leaking until one day when I watched my wife clean the sink.
She was splashing water all over the tap which had a pop up waste lever and the water was running down the hole for the pop up waste arm causing the apparant leak. Fan bloody tastic!

  • If I haven't eplied to you yet, I will and am sorry. Bit swamped this week with central heating.

  • Hi, PMd yesterday- PM me back when you're able to. I'm happy to bung a few quid into LFGSS coffers as a thank you if we can sort something out .

A ha. First dibs on this assessment.

  • A ha. First dibs on this assessment.

Quite pleased with my first attempt. Not assessed on this in the real world. Sorry. May be offering gas appliance (boiler, cooker fire etc.) installation, testing, servicing and repairs in a few months. Won't be free I'm afraid, as I have to have a Gas Safe registered person with me and they will need paying for their time.

  • How much does it cost to become gas safe?

  • Is that a real installation or a classroom? I'm guessing real going by the existing pipework, floorboards, etc. but that's a hell of a lot of space there for that kit!
Hope the mains supply is a temp ;-)

    :)

  • Just gas safe registered or the plumbing side too?

    Lots is the short answer.
If you just want to be on the Gas safe you have to find someone who already holds ACS status, get them to sign your work off 6 times, take photos and write knowledgeably about what you did and why. If we use boilers, as an example, you have install 2, service 2 and repair 2. You can then sit the exam/assessment on boilers. If you want to service other appliances, you'll have to take 6 exams/assessments for each appliance you want to service. I can find out the price where I study for this, but it isn't cheap. You also have to retake the exams every 5 years which is about £500.

The full package, Master Plumber through to Gas Safe registered has cost me (paid in advance) £10,500.

Classroom. The green, yellow, white and red pipes were there already, the rest I done did by myself. Tomorrow morning it will all be cut up. Lots of space to practice for this next week. No space and nothing connected. No leaks, messy wiring, dodgy soldering, or mistakes allowed. Sometimes I wish I was smaller.

  • I'm confident that I could link all that up, but it would take me forever.
